Refugees from Katrina are headed this way, according to the Olympian. One family is taking in 25 relatives:
"We're going to put them up in tents," she said. "We're going to have the little kids in the house. And try to find them housing as soon as possible, so they can get back to normal living conditions."

Khaos has an idea:
Earlier in this blog the Olympian was quoted as saying "As many as a couple dozen vacant downtown storefronts have become an issue in recent months for neighboring businesses and tourists." See More Vacancies Downtown.

What better way to put this space to use than to house hurricane evacuees. I can't put anyone up as I'm currently houseless myself, but I am totally willing to volunteer at a local shelter for evacuees.

Sounds like a good idea.

I wish people could be so acc

I wish people could be so accepting of the 2000 homeless people already here. This further proves to me that homelessness and poverty are morally wrong because they are avoidable.

Without using government, how is homelessness and poverty avoidable?

A shift in cultural dynamics

A shift in cultural dynamics would have to take place. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the pendulum has already begun to swing in that direction.

Rob, that is a big assumption to derive from my comments regarding my position or feelings toward homelessness.

I myself have been homeless, and just recently thought I would be again, but now have managed to rent a glorified closet.

My comment about the vacant storefronts was never intended seriously anyway- I know the capitalists wouldn't go for it, but if they did, it would probably be more in the realm of short-term housing for displaced people, rather than long-term shelter, unless they were getting paid rent and the site was rezoned.

Personally though, it really bugs me when people make assumptions about my beliefs or positions based on two sentences I posted on the internet, unless I explicitly stated my position in the post.

I honestly wasn't commenting

I honestly wasn't commenting on anything you said, khaos. I was talking about the response to the hurricane.
