Here are a few helpful facts for you to use when determining whether or not to head north to Safeco Field with your pitchfork:

Slugging %: .436
On-Base %: .355
Age: 34
Position: Left field/First base/Designated hitter

Those of you who like baseball may remember that 2003 team which won 93 games. Many players had similar results to Mr. Ibanez up there. Sounds great, right? Well in 2004, about half of those players completely disintegrated due to "mid-30's syndrome," we won 63 games, and we had to spend a couple years firing people. Just when you think it's over, when you think things are heading in the right direction, that they've got to give Chris Snelling or Adam Jones a shot in left field for 2007, the club says "No! Raul Ibanez has a sweet lefty stroke! Youth be damned! Also, I think Raul deserves a raise! Bwahahahahaha..."

In conclusion, the Seattle Mariners will never win anything. And football sucks. Fuck.

If you guys are right, we mig

If you guys are right, we might as well say goodbye to Ichiro.

I'm willing to give them one more season, I think their pitching is coming around, and all they need is for Beltre and Sexson to produce the way they have been known to, and we're a contender again.

Ichiro gave an interview shortly after the season ended in which he indicated that not many people took winning and losing seriously in the clubhouse.

The opportunity to win a World Series is closed for right now. Anyone watching the team for any period of time should have seen the writing on the wall. The nucleus of the team was getting older and, for one reason or another, management refused to go out and trade for the needed bat/arm in July when it was needed.

It also didn't help that the younger guys just weren't filling the shoes the way they should have been and the people down in AAA and AA who were supposed to come up and help seemed to flame out.

Ryan Anderson, anyone?

Ichiro isn't going anywhere,

Ichiro isn't going anywhere, fellas, until he retires. He's said that he has no desire to leave, and the M's are owned by a Japanese company. He's a career Mariner.

I'm just extremely annoyed. We have a hall of fame leadoff hitter, a cleanup hitter who's good for 35-45 homers a year, and we have the best young starting pitcher in baseball, who happens to make the league minimum salary. When you can get #1 starter results for under half a million dollars, you're in position to pounce and go for the championship, period. Instead, we're throwing all our money at players in their 30's who were never that great in the first place. Raul Ibanez and Jarrod Washburn are not bringing us a title.

I'm praying that Beltre and Johjima will hit. If they don't, we're screwed, and we're going to be screwed for several years (which would probably hurt).

Felix isn't ready to be a playoff caliber pitcher...yet. I don't think he's going to have a 17-2, 3.00 ERA this season.

I'm not saying he's going to do bad, but we're not going to be able to ride his arm to the Promised Land (in terms of this season).

Last year, between AAA and th

Last year, between AAA and the majors, he threw 172 1/3 innings. The team has said they'll let him throw 180, 190 innings, unless we contend. We probably won't. But that means that if he stays healthy, he'll be up around 200 IP by 2007. And if he's healthy, he's one of the top 5 pitchers in the AL. Honestly, the only guy in the AL I'd rather have is Johan Santana.

We should be building our team to take advantage of those cheap years, 2007-2010. Ibanez was just signed for 2007-2008. Thing is, we have outfield depth, but very little in terms of starting pitching, either in the majors or the minors. We'll probably need to spend money to get a good rotation in Seattle, behind Felix. I think we should be positioning ourselves to plug the best trio of Reed, Snelling, Jones, Clement, Tuiasosopo, and Choo into CF, LF, and DH. Had we not resigned Ibanez, we could fill those three positions for right around one million dollars, leaving us a ton to spend on pitching. As it stands now, we'll be paying Ibanez 5-6 million a year through 2008 whether we have to replace him or not. It's just bad strategy, especially after handing Jarrod Washburn 9 million dollars a year to be mediocre. Ibanez and Washburn will make a combined 14 million, which is plenty to sign a #2 starter with. But there's always 2009, I guess.

Also, if Felix's ERA is higher than 3.5 this year I'll eat my shoe.

I'd like to point out that

I'd like to point out that everything I said in this thread was wrong. And I never ate my shoe, but you'd be right to make me!
