The AP has confirmed through undisclosed sources that Interior Secretary Gail Norton, a former Colorado AG, will resign today because of her connection with Jack Abramoff. Tribal clients of Abramoff donated $50,000 dollars to a conservative environmental group founded by Norton, shortly afterwards, they were granted a meeting with her.

This is starting to get closer and closer to the top. A cabinet member resigns today. Who's next, and how far up does the corruption go?

Hey, I think that this is great. Only problem now is that Norton will have more time to tear up Yellowstone on her snowmobile, now that she opened up the park to it. She may also be a force in terms of pushing for increased resource extraction from public lands as she returns to the private sector.

Who's next? Who isn't next!? I heard rumors that cheney was considering stepping down recently.

Speaking of Norton:

"Yesterday she touted the government's boosting of natural gas production on federal lands by 17 percent between 2001 and 2004, which prompted National Association of Manufacturers President John M. Engler to praise Norton for having "steered the U.S. toward a foundation for future domestic energy production.""

I know its easy to pile onto

I know its easy to pile onto a Bush admin official, but there is one good thing I want to point out about Norton. She was a proponent of cooperative conservation, a theory that people who live in a particular place, can suss out their natural resource problems better than a state or national agency.

This is already the case in Washington, especially in the Nisqually Watershed with the Nisqually River Council. The concept itself is a great testiment to the kind of local solutions that can be had when people are active participants in their suroundings, not just sitting back and bitching when the government doesn't do when they want, or suing when things don't go their way.
