From The Onion - America's Finest News Source:

WASHINGTON, DC—A Gallup/Harris Interactive poll released Monday indicates that nearly nine out of 10 Americans are "tired of having a country."

[snip]

"I already belong to a health club, a church, and the Kiwanis Club," Tammy Golden of Los Angeles wrote. "I'm a member of the Von's Grocery Super Savers, which gets me a discount on certain groceries. These are all well-managed organizations with real benefits. None of them send me a confusing bill once a year and make me work it out myself, then throw me in jail if I get it wrong."

Olympia, WA student Helen Berg expressed frustration with the country's voting process.

"I was gonna vote, but it rained," Berg wrote. "It wasn't for the president anyway, so what difference does it make? The president is the only one that matters, and you don't even get to vote for him."

Funny. Though I think there might be some truth to it.

The federal gov't is run amok, and is no longer accountable to the people. Just check this article, "Enough of the DC Dems" by Molly Ivins.

I think that the States would be better off if they weren't so "United." I would like to see Northern California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho break off and sort of do their own thing for a while.

But then again, I am just a secessionist.

For purposes of clarity, my urge to secede has nothing to do with the continuance of slavery, and everything to do with the abolition of "slavery" in its modern present day forms.

Might as well include British Columbia in there as well, since Canada is already dis-uniting by the day. I can picture a scenario where Quebec talks a walk, and that starts a whole chain reaction resulting in a North America with very different political borders within a decade. In Canada, I'm sure a province could strike out as an independent and there would probably not be any bloodshed. All quite civil. But down here, state rights in conflict with federal control has resulted in violence throughout our entire history. So if you want Ecotopia, you might have to be prepared to die for it.

Steven, we are all prepared to die, whether we know it, or not.

But seriously, I think there is a way to effect a major change, like the ecotopia of which you speak, without the necessity of degeneration into violent human conflicts.

There is a history of social movements based in nonviolence to effect real change. Just because America has a history of violence, doesn't mean it has to be that way.

It's a choice that everyone has to make, everyday. The Buddha, Jesus, Gandhi, MLK, et al. would appreciate it if we all thought long and hard, and seriously about the relative violence v. nonviolence of our everyday actions, and how they contribute to the general social welfare.

I like the idea of including BC in the plan. Thinking about it some more, Southern California is nice. - But I think the point is to create a sensibly sized area that is manageable.

Things are starting to get very interesting.

What do we have here if the owner of the electronic voting machine company says he is going to insure a win for whomever Bush endorses to succeed his officeship???

A bunch of garbage, if you ask me.

Why? Because secession is being advocated? I think there's a difference between wanting to secede and calling it "States Rights" in order to preserve slavery and wanting to secede because you think the rest of the country, or at least very large parts of it, have gone somewhat crazy. I don't see the inequality that this would be preserving. I think also that up to a certain point people should be able to do as they like, and if the U.S. is divided to the point where parts of it have mutually irreconcilable differences, maybe a separation is in order.

Slavery was only part of the Civil War.

Although this is The Onion, I think it does demonstrate that people are still uncertain of what their state signed-up for when they joined the United States. If I remember correctly, I saw Drew Hendricks on TCTV talking about the federal government having too much power over the national guard in each state. I actually happen to agree with Drew on the issue (assuming I am recollecting this interview correctly).

Unfortunately, the Union answered the question of what the children could and could not do and, unlike Quebec in Canada (although the discussion has seemed to have been toned down a bit), nobody is going to have fortitude to bring the question to the table again.

For better or worse, this is what we have.
