Traffic circles

traffic circle What's the feeling among Olympians about the proliferation of traffic circles around town. There is now one in Lacey, two at the top of the 4th St. Bridge, and one at the main entrance to The Evergreen State College. Are there any more?
There is a cute animation program here that lets you see how they work (since it seems that some folks may need a little instruction). It's been a few months, now. What's the verdict?

Traffic circles

There are two more roundabouts on Marvin road west of I-5. I think roundabouts are great. The first experience I had with them was in the UK, and I thought they were a brilliant idea, no more sitting at traffic lights with a big line of traffic in front of you idling, wasting gas and trying your patience. Everybody must get used to them and stop grousing, they are here deal with them.

The Big "O"

At this very moment construction is underway for the biggest traffic circle in the area. It is on Tumwater Blvd. (formerly known as Airdustrial Way) at the Newmarket intersection. Perhaps we could use the circle as a giant letter "O" in forming the word "OlyBlog" so pilots landing at the Oly Airport can see it from the air.

I like them. They work

I like them. They work pretty well unless you have one side of the roundabout that is busy when all the others aren't (galaxy drive) so you can sit there for quite awhile waiting for a break in the cars if they are all the tailgating type. The fact that people have to slow down to make the circle is nice though. I'm certainly more aware of pedestrians at them than I am at traffic lights.

Prefer them to stop lights.  They encourage cooperation and require a little slowdown.

I like them

In University Place I've seen a number of them with some very nice landscaping and rock gardens, kind of nice to have a little bit of nature and art in the midst of traffic.  If there is no money in the municipal budgets for this sort of thing perhaps it could be a good neighborhood project for the neighborhood they are in.  A little planning in the start of the project will not only contribute to safer streets, but a little extra beauty in our communities.

Help! I'm stuck in a traffic

Help! I'm stuck in a traffic circle! The gravitational pull is keeping me forever driving in a continuous counter-clockwise orbit-- an orbit that grows smaller and tighter until the vehicle gets sucked into a vortex! So far I've seen an AMC Pacer and a Ford Probe vanish before my eyes!

Here's what you have to do, look for the duck.  It is a friendly duck, you may not think it is friendly because it will look like it is eating some pajamas.  This duck is your guide, follow it closely and you will break the bonds the keep you in the circle.  Same thing happened to me in a Wal-Mart. Believe me the duck is a lifesaver.

Traffic circles ROCK!

Traffic circles ROCK! Remember when traffic would back up all the way on State due to the light on Harrison after the bridge? If you don't that's cool, but I can tell you that it is much better and the flow though Downtown is less congested. I like traffic circles, they make you stop and think about driving. They make you aware of your surroundings. Many people however feel that you must get through them as fast as you can. Personally I like to go slow and enjoy the awesome public art that gets placed in the middle of these things. Sometimes I have to go round three or four times to get a good look, and the best part is that traffic circles afford me that option.

Ya know, besides being a traffic violation, and dangerous what with not keeping ones eyes on the road, if everyone were to drive in continuous circles we'd have the same traffic troubles as before.
