Over at Olympia Time there has been a discussion on whether Michael Normoyle, candidate for Olympia City Council is a Republican or not. Through the miracle of the internet, I have decided "not." Nor is he a Democrat, he is seemingly a raging non-partisan, which is nice because the city council races are totally non-partisan.

Since the discussion on city council races has been slow so far, we should start talking about it.

I know we don't have the classic Oly Progressives vs. Shadow Republicans type races this year that usually get people out. But, these races are still important, even if no one wants to talk about them.

Who?

Joe Hyer has a squeeky clean record and a goofy smile, but I don't think he should be on the city council anymore. There's too much funny backroom stuff going on between the ODA and CC. I met with his opposition, John Bell, last week and came away from it unsatisfied to say the least. With Bethanne Barnes not running, Joe Hyer has been handed a cake walk. She could have challenged him, but not Bell. Not from what I've seen.

Greens have endorsed Joe

The Green Party of South Puget Sound endorsed Joe Hyer, who became a Green Party member, at last month's meeting. I did not block the proposal, but I did argue against it. He's too closely corporate for my comfort. (By that I mean he is dismissive of issues around corporate personhood and private property having extra civil rights while humans get fewer civil rights...) He's not going to be getting party monies (not much that way, anyway) but we'll probably field volunteers for Joe during the campaign season. Remember, the ODA kicked off their BID (Bidness Improvement District, apologies to Texans) at the most recent City Council meeting, so the alternative neighborhood association needs to act now to stymie that move (like get the ODA funding pulled and redirect that to a REAL N'bhood association.) Downtown Neighborhood Association has not gotten too political yet... but they put on a hell of a street sale! One way to challenge the community = capitalism ideas at City Hall is to talk to the candidates, and the best way to do that is to invite them to a room full of eyeballs which you organized. Any takers? Drew Hendricks is the facilitator of the Green Party of South Puget Sound, a host on Free Radio Olympia Tuesdays 5-6PM, and an organizer with Olympia Copwatch. Call 870-3127 to speak with him. (Flames and hatemail redirect to dev/null)

More on GP Endorsements

We've decided to endorse, without support, Carlos Perez for Port Commissioner (Yelm area). He's running against Steve Pottle, and looks like he would be a good ally of Paul Telford as far as fiscal responsibility at the port is concerned.________ We did not endorse Paul Telford (He asked that we not endorse him since his strategy is strictly individual based, not group based support). Both Paul and Carlos visited our group Thursday night to speak.______ Both men want the Port to carry its own weight financially and stop using tax money to run operations (they both see tax money being more appropriate to fund capital expenses, not operations). __________ Neither man is an environmentalist and neither man is a traditional progressive by a long shot, but the Green Party's values demand that we challenge the policies at the Port this season and we think we can do this best by supporting Carlos Perez for Port Commission. _________ Jeff Kingsbury was invited (twice) and was a No-Show both times. _______ And we finally endorsed Phyllis Booth, who has been a strong Green Party supporter and member for quite a while now. She's running against Doug Mah for City Council in Olympia, and she has done her homework. She's admittedly not the slickest speaker in town, but she stays at council meetings until the end (few except maybe Tom Howdeshell can say that, among those who are not being paid to stay...). ___________

Thank God for Joe Hyer and his evil corporation!

Aren't Greens for small business? The vast majority of small businesses in Washington (and all other states) are also corporations, so all the rhetoric about dissolving corporate rights, 'evil corporate influence' etc, scares the small business people, because they feel lumped into the stereotype. Hence - you can't be anti-corporation and pro-small-business. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Small businesses are corporations. You can be anti 'multi-national corporations' and anti 'huge-mega-corporations'. The problem is folks never make those distinctions and everyone gets lumped together. Joe Hyer too closely corporate? In this sense, yes. But thank God for him and his evil corporation...they do wonderful things for this community!

Aren't small businesses and corporations supposed to benefit the people? Let's not have to thank a God for wonderful things done by corporations for this community, let's mandate it by law.

I don't seem to remember the part about small businesses and corporations existing to benefit the people in the Constitution.

From what I have seen from Joe Hyer, he is a puppet for TJ and Ware, the consummate follower.
