traffic circle

From the Olympian:

Many motorists complain about roundabouts, the giant traffic circles that are growing in popularity in South Sound.

As Olympia officials consider adding three more roundabouts to Boulevard Road, one question looms: Are the circles improving public safety on area roadways?

Preliminary information in Lacey and Olympia indicates that there are fewer injury accidents in roundabouts and that the severity of injuries is diminished. The new traffic-calming devices are working.

In fact, they're working so well:
Bolstered by the encouraging accident statistics, Olympia officials are poised to add up to three roundabouts along Boulevard Road. At a recent public meeting, neighbors were divided on the issue of roundabouts. Like 'em or hate 'em, local officials are building a credible case that roundabouts improve safety for the motoring public.

Interesting to note the article said "injury accidents." Does this mean there is an increase or no effect in non-injury accidents? And, for the record, I do think a roundabout is a much better option than a signal.

I like these roundabouts. They are also superior aesthetically to the stop sign or light regulated intersections.

regarding the traffic circle issue:

Our culture is obsessed with so-called development. In Thurston County alone we are exceeding Washington development laws by developping too fast. Why are we constantly fixing things that aren't broken like roads that are brand new? Who profits from these "improvements?" How is the environment handling the repeated application of petroleum based products and concrete.
