From the Seattle PI:

NEW YORK -- The largest shareholder in Knight Ridder Inc. is turning up the pressure on the newspaper publisher, saying in a regulatory filing Thursday that it may nominate a slate of directors at the company's annual meeting next year.

Private Capital Management LP, an investment firm based in Naples, Fla., said it was considering that and other moves to boost the value of its 19 percent stake in Knight Ridder after seeing only a 'limited response' to the 'serious concerns' about the company raised by PCM and other shareholders. PCM demands Knight Ridder put itself up for sale.

It's not irrelevant to the story at all. It is important for people to be aware that political interest groups are trying to buy up media sources. It threatens a free society. It would be just as relevant to me if the money went to Kerry/Edwards. I wasn't trying to be partisan at all. It seriously concerns me.

I said this before, though: Media fifty years ago was under far more control than today. There's simply too many resources available to the general public for traditional media (print and television) to make up a story. Media, for the most part, has always been under the control of a few people. I would say now it's MORE open than yesterday.___I didn't mean to sound unconcerned, either. It did come off as a bit partisan to me, only because of the nature of the website. I wouldn't be concerned if a company had given to Kerry-Edwards or another political campaign.

It's relevant in my eyes because of something I read awhile ago in "The Chain Gang," a book about how Gannett (the old Olympian owners) used local newspaper monopolies to grow their company in the late 70s and early 80s. In short, when Gannett came into a market and tried to destroy the local weeklies by slashing their add prices, their competitors would fight back with anti-trust lawsuits, and sometimes the Department of Justice would get into the act. When Reagan was elected the DOJ suddenly stopped suing on behalf of the smaller papers and Gannett had their way.
