From The Olympian:

OLYMPIA -- Port of Olympia officials plan a presentation Monday about what would be the first harbor dredge here in about 30 years. The port hopes to gain permits to start the $2.4 million job in October. The work would take four months to complete, said Jim Amador, the port's marine terminal director.

The article also mentions that the sediment in the harbor has been tested and is not contaminated, which is a definite concern. One wonders how many samples were taken, and where they were taken from. Does anyone know if there has ever been any industry along Budd inlet that produced toxic waste?

Dredging completely disturbs

Dredging completely disturbs the bottom of the inlet; completely destroys the habitat of any bottom dwelling or feeding marine life, toxic materials aside.

There was a company which manufactured pilings on the port peninsula for a few years, I think this was back in the 50's, I will try to look up more information about it, later. Any way, they used some toxic substances to preserve the pilings, a mix of tar and sulphur I think. So, there is an area on port property which is classified as a toxic waste site.

Here's an older story from the Olympian to get started.

Cascade Pole Site, state decreed it a hazardous waste site. Remediation ongoing. Dredging in area doesn't make sense to me, but I don't know enough about it.

Dredging is a mechanical destruction of the marine floor habitat.

Toxics aside, dredging is harmful to the ecosystem.
