I know its only been a week since I ran into Olyblog, but I have giddy high hopes for a local blog community here.

The last few days I've ran into a few posts about hyperlocal journalism (which seems to be what Rick is doing here) and how it can help community discourse.

Already on Olyblog we're seeing more discussion of Olympia City Council candidates then I've seen anywhere else so far.

Just for giggles, here is wikipedia on hyperlocal.

The only thing I would change about Olyblog right now is the tagline: "This ain't CNN." Please, Rick, change it. Without the deep James Earl Jones voice, it isn't funny.

Suggestions?

I'm willing to field suggestions for a new tag line. Anybody got a good one? How about: "Don't worry. It's only a blog."
»

Anything but "blogging the hi

Anything but "blogging the hippest town in the West." That Time magazine article is pretty welled been played out by now.

Maybe, "All Olympia, all the time," but that is pretty lame too.

Maybe you should have a full-fledged contest. Winner gets a beer or something.

Re: New Tag Lines

Okay here are some ideas:
  • Not Your Momma's Blog
  • Where Local People Meet Local Issues
  • Local Blogging
  • Blogging at the Local Level
  • Blogging on the Local
  • It's Not Loco, It's Local!
  • It's Local
  • The Grass Roots
  • Netroots Goes Local
  • Express Yourself
  • Where Local Ideas Meet

Just some ideas off the top of my head, maybe it'll help lead to something.

"This ain't CNN" is bad, for

"This ain't CNN" is bad, for me personally at least, because it seems to be too smarty-pants and doesn't really speak to what Olyblog is. Of course, as a participant and not the creator, I'm defining Olyblog on my own.

There are alot of things that aren't CNN and that even provide an alternative, such as DailyKos and MyDD. More accurately, I guess if Olyblog "weren't" something, it wouldn't be the Olympian.

It would be better to choose a tagline that reflects the local nature of Olyblog.

I'm not sure you even need a tagline at this point, as OlyBlog becomes more well known. I agree with Emmett about the current "This ain't CNN." Why? It's using a negative to define this group. Maybe using something incorporating Hyperlocal News for the Olympia Community, as in your mission statement, might be more descriptive and positive.

I believe PBS already used that subtitle, back when Alistair Cooke was alive since I seem to recall him reading that in his very dramatic British accent. It didn't go over very well so they dropped it, which is too bad since here in Grays Harbor County PBS ratings went 'way up during that little motto. Or maybe I just dreamt the whole thing. Whatever. Or, whatever. Or, as my daughter says, whatever.

If you ever find yourself in Montesano check out the mural in the court house there, I would not want to be a defendant in that court.

That's the building where

That's the building where the Wobblies were tried for the "Centralia Massacre" of 1919. Frank Van Gilder, the man who had been leading the vets during the parade on Nov. 11, 1919 and gave the command for them to stop in front of the IWW hall, told me ca. 1973-74 that he helped wiretap the defense attorney during the trial.

Now that I did not know.

Now that I did not know.  I'm planning to take a walking tour of the Massacre sites around Centralia.  I guess the walk will be long if I head to Montesano, but the mural casts an interesting perspective on the trial, if only
in an ironic way.

Vidette visitor

One of the weirdest experiences I had when I worked at the Vidette in Monte was a lady who hitch hiked into town looking for information about the massacre and the trial. We would always help folks out who wanted to look through our morgue, so I spent about a half hour pulling out those huge books of old newspapers for her.

One of her ancestors was a wobbly that took part, and it was a deep dark section of family history that no one ever talked about. I think she mentioned she had just recently retired and was just starting to look into what role her ancestor played.

Did I mention that she hitch-hiked into town? Anyway, that night I was covering a city council meeting in Elma and she wandered in. Apparently, she was on her way back to Olympia and walked the entire way. The Elma police chief was there, and he took care of her. Gave her a food voucher for the convenience store, a bus voucher for the last GHT bus out of town that night and a hotel voucher for when she got to Oly.

Missing Graphic

Is it just this machine, or is our 4th Ave. Bridge missing from the OlyBlog masthead? What's the deal?

The blog has been quirky...

...the past week or two. I blame changes at our host(Bryght). Although, I have heard that we're on track for the warmest winter yet, and you know what that means...

Last night, it wasn't loading at all. Try refreshing your browser and see if that resolves it.

2007 update

I just returned from the ALA Conference in DC. One of the presentations was by Jason Zengerle of The New Republic who gave his take on the place of blogs in journalism. His main message was that "blogs are political tools, not information tools." He gave his side of the Daily Kos controversy. In an attempt to find a progressive third party account of this episode, I looked here . Worth reading for those who regard blogging as an activist tool regardless of left/right leanings.
