I know its only been a week since I ran into Olyblog, but I have giddy high hopes for a local blog community here. The last few days I've ran into a few posts about hyperlocal journalism (which seems to be what Rick is doing here) and how it can help community discourse. Already on Olyblog we're seeing more discussion of Olympia City Council candidates then I've seen anywhere else so far. Just for giggles, here is wikipedia on hyperlocal. The only thing I would change about Olyblog right now is the tagline: "This ain't CNN." Please, Rick, change it. Without the deep James Earl Jones voice, it isn't funny. |
OlyBlog.net OlyBlog is devoted to hyperlocal news and discussion specifically about Olympia, Washington. Contributors to OlyBlog are citizen journalists who care about their community and are tired of corporate media. If you'd like to contribute, please register for an account. Here is a list of local news beats that need to be covered. You can post your news as a personal blog entry, and it will be reviewed (and possibly edited) for promotion to the front page. You can also send news via email. All members of OlyBlog agree to abide by our comment and fair use policies. If you are frustrated about something said in a comment thread, go here. Maybe, "All Olympia, all the time," but that is pretty lame too.
Maybe you should have a full-fledged contest. Winner gets a beer or something.

Submitted by emmettoconnell on Tue, 08/30/2005 - 10:43am."This ain't CNN" is bad, for me personally at least, because it seems to be too smarty-pants and doesn't really speak to what Olyblog is. Of course, as a participant and not the creator, I'm defining Olyblog on my own.
There are alot of things that aren't CNN and that even provide an alternative, such as DailyKos and MyDD. More accurately, I guess if Olyblog "weren't" something, it wouldn't be the Olympian.
It would be better to choose a tagline that reflects the local nature of Olyblog.

I think she mentioned she had just recently retired and was just starting to look into what role her ancestor played.
Did I mention that she hitch-hiked into town? Anyway, that night I was covering a city council meeting in Elma and she wandered in. Apparently, she was on her way back to Olympia and walked the entire way. The Elma police chief was there, and he took care of her. Gave her a food voucher for the convenience store, a bus voucher for the last GHT bus out of town that night and a hotel voucher for when she got to Oly.

2007 update
Submitted by stevenl on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 2:00pm.I just returned from the ALA Conference in DC. One of the presentations was by Jason Zengerle of The New Republic who gave his take on the place of blogs in journalism. His main message was that "blogs are political tools, not information tools." He gave his side of the Daily Kos controversy. In an attempt to find a progressive third party account of this episode, I looked here . Worth reading for those who regard blogging as an activist tool regardless of left/right leanings.
