I keep trying to like the guy (I like Edwards) but I was flipping through cnn.com and found this:
» Barack Obama Supports extending the assault weapons ban. Supports national law against carrying concealed weapons, with exceptions for retired police and military personnel. Supports limiting gun sales to one per month. Game Over in Norm's court.

Good thing you're not a single issue guy
Submitted by Guglielmo on Tue, 01/08/2008 - 12:06pm.Single issue voters, Norm
Submitted by Anonymously Larry on Tue, 01/08/2008 - 12:10pm.We'll have to agree to disagree. I think there are many more issues that are far more important to our country - education, poverty, homelessness, interest rates, recession, on and on et al that are far more important that right to own arms. Especially when you consider that it's nothing more than a fear motivated wedge issue (see abortion, homosexual marriage, terrorism).
Whether Obama "supports" such or not is not an indicator that he could even get it through Congress from an Administrative side. This is a wedge issue purely intended on smoke and mirror styled politics that will get you closing your mind to all of the good issues the candidate may support.
I can only remind you that nothing has changed, per se, on abortion dispite 20 plus years of wedge issuing, along with a slam-dunk Administration/Congress that was all one party.
Scares the heck out of me...

Submitted by Norm on Tue, 01/08/2008 - 4:57pm.I'm not a single issue voter, I do weigh them differently though. Firearms certainly get a high number on that scale for me. Certain aspects of firearms concern me more than others. I have never heard this issue mentioned before (concealed carry) and it's a fairly important one to me. I don't like other aspects of Obama as well, but this is a pretty heavy weight, and it tipped the scales. GO Edwards!
What you say is true of Abortion.....but go back 100 years for firearms and you will see that they have been restricted, on multiple levels, many different times.
Norm, let's resign to being in friendly opposition
Submitted by Anonymously Larry on Tue, 01/08/2008 - 9:46pm.You know I'm not "anti-gun". Hell if the damned things didn't cost as much as two sets of golf clubs, I'm probably would have bought one, as I'm interested in target shooting.
I just can't come to terms with the concept that the acceptance of the kind of firearms in the 1700s and what is happening today can be just excused away on the basis of "it's always worked in the past". We must admit that there is a pretty good sized group of people that want to see change in terms of firearm ownership.
What compromise can be reached by the opposing viewpoints? I think that each side has merit and everyone firmly nailing their feet to the floor isn't going to solve anything.
I'll start by asking if you think that there are any other issues that effect citizens that should carry more priority than firearm possession.
Your move.
I do think that
Submitted by Norm on Wed, 01/09/2008 - 12:28am.I'm not gonna go into them here though. My views are pretty moderate, but I feel pretty strongly about them anyway.
Oh, and I did not say you were anti-gun. I do think that you value the right to own a firearm far less than you value other rights, but that's for another thread.
Exercise in communication
Submitted by Anonymously Larry on Wed, 01/09/2008 - 5:35am.We're getting better. My statement "you know I'm not anti-gun" wasn't anything but an affirmation of what you and I both know. I was not attempting to say that you said otherwise.
Yes, I do value to the right to own a firearm far less than I value other rights.
That's right.
