OLYMPIA - An Olympia woman would have paid just about anything so her Army husband could spend Christmas with their kids.

Now she's convinced Continental Airlines took advantage of her, turning her Christmas wish into a stressful and expensive proposition.

[snip]

Continental Airlines told her they had plenty of seats available... for a price.

For the first change, Sandy called Continental's customer service line. "When I said this is my situation, he's changed ports, I need to get him out of Corpus Christi, oh, well you can pay another 700 dollars."

Airlines are ridiculous.While

Airlines are ridiculous.

While I don't necessarily think they're doing anything illegal, they do a lot of bad business.

In my own personal experience, I've had a fairly easy time dealing with them so long as I stick to the original plan. I've had to bite the bullet a couple of times, though, when asking about changing a flight...months in advance.

I just saw a feature on KOMO

I just saw a feature on KOMO regarding this story.

As someone who flies quite frequently I can say I'll make sure to avoid Continental where possible.

Unfortunately, though, the practice probably isn't restricted to one airline. For instance, using American Airlines, I wanted to change a flight from one destination to another. They said I could for $500 (which would have doubled the price of the ticket). Instead the "best" they could do was change the date of the flight, not the destination.

First of all, Continental has

First of all, Continental has one of the best safety records of any major airline. Second of all, Continental is always on time. Third of all, Continental is one of the few airlines that is not bankrupt right now. Fourth of all, the overworked/underpaid people at the counter and the flight attendants (call em stewardists and I'll make sure your coffee lands in your lap), and the pilots are NOT RESPONSIBLE for the CEO's business ethics and prices. Fifth of all, flying in America is highly highly stressful, especially for the employees who have to be there EVERY DAY compared to all the passengers that whine and whine and whine on their ONE STUPID TRIP!

Then continue to do business

Then continue to do business with Continental, it doesn't matter to me. I'm not trying to go O'Reilly and organize an OlyBlog boycott.

I was simply stating (a) where my dollar where most likely go and (b) that the practice of charging a significant fee for changing destination after purchasing a ticket is not restricted to a single airline.
