I need to get this off my chest. I know that rants are not healthy, but in my ranting, I hope a message which will benefit all smaller non-profits on the Oly area can be discerned. I work at Bread and Roses (this fact drives most of my reasons for posting on olyblog). We are, as I'm sure many of you know, a small grass-roots non-profit which serves the poor and homeless with a modest facility. Modest is being euphemistic; we operate out of the first floor of an old house. Living-room = office. We love donations, but only the ones that we can appropriately use and efficiently store. We are open during regular business hours Monday through Friday, and although we are often busy, we are always happy to see if a given donation can be used by either ourselves at the non-profit (say, a printer) or by our guests (hygiene supplies, socks). If we cannot accommodate a donation, we can easily refer the donor to any number of agencies that are able to handle such a donation. Just today, Sunday, my porch (I say my because yes, I live here, too) has been inundated with clothing , speakers, an unusably dirty couch, a pasta maker, large unwieldy carpet scraps, and many more items of questionable use. Because of the nature of Bread and Roses, it is up me and any of my four coworkers to move all of this so we can be a functioning agency tomorrow. I do not honestly think the donor thought one of our guests could really use a pasta maker-it was the thoughtless act of one person schlepping their offal onto an already beleaguered non-profit. Please, I know we are not the only non-profit to have to deal with this. Let your friends and family know, we are happy to take inquiries about donations, but during business hours only! It takes time out of our ability to fulfill our mission to serve. Thank you.

I have an

HP ink jet printer, a Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner, and a working color TV. You want any of those?

OlyReusables option

I've been encouraging folks to put their donated items on OlyReusables (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OlyReusables/ - formerly freecycle-Olympia).  This saves the headache of stockpiling donated items as it leverages the ability for people to list items themselves and managing their own donations with individuals that have needs.  Their objective is to keep otherwise usable stuff out of landfills (an admirable goal), but it has the side effect of moving goods into the hands of people that need them.

Thanks for the link

I have too much STUFF

Hopefully it starts to level

Hopefully it starts to level out so you don't have to clear the front porch every morning. I'm constantly amazed that their are folks like you in the world who can do this every day.

Summer Socks.

Usually the only acceptable clothes to give people in the hot weather, are socks.. and maybe t-shirts.

The clothing bank is literally right down the street from the advocacy center. So if you have clothes.. bring them to the CLOTHING BANK.

Keep your head up Liz.. it's not easy but you're doing a really good job.

You're entitled

For what you do and what you have to put up with in thoughtless people. I wouldn't call that a rant -- I call it a useful message -- so you go right ahead.

Could you post some sort of

Could you post some sort of sign on the door/front porch? I am sure there are a lot of people out there who think that they have something that you would find really useful when in reality you wouldn't.

What she said! Maybe a sign

What she said! Maybe a sign with the 5 most needed items, and at the bottom the 5 most common items that you don't need.

I put two signs up yesterday

I put two signs up yesterday with directions and phone numbers to the food bank and to the clothing bank. We'll probably have pamphlets out by the end of this week that people can take-not only with directions to other donation centers but lists of what we *do* need. Thanks to everyone for the feedback! And Guglielmo, thanks for thinking of us, but miraculously we did have a printer donated today! The TV and vacuum can be donated (I believe) to the Union Gospel Mission's 'Serving Hands For You' program which stockpiles home appliances and furniture for low-income folks moving into new places. Thanks Again!

Your request will be on the air......

I usually encourage the listeners of my radio program, "Hobo Radio", to donate as much as possible to our local outreach programs. If you ever have specific things you want me to ask for on-air, I will be happy to do so. You can find all of my contact info on my website.

By the way, OlyBlog, I have added your link to my site.

You know...

The pasta maker could have been dropped off by a well meaning person who may be a little unclear on how you operate. If they understood that you fed people, they may have thought that you could use it and did not have thoughts of someone toting it around the streets with them. See it from the other side, just a thought...

I'd be inclined to agree

I'd be inclined to agree with you, Vincent, except that when I dropped by B&R earlier this week it looked as though someone had dumped about two truckloads of garbage.  The pasta maker was apparently one of the items buried in this mess.

Keep your chin up Glasses, you're doing good work!

Vincent Vega, I am inclined

Vincent Vega, I am inclined to agree as well, except that by a simple phone call during business hours, we could have let the donor know of a place which would accept the pasta maker. Also, we would have been able to let the donor know of what services we do provide. Thanks for the reminder, though.
