Time to look at some numbers. ![]() According to our statcounter, we get an average of 1,538 unique visits per day. However, that number underestimates our total readership, as not everyone looks at the blog everyday. Hence, the poll yesterday to get a sense of how often people do, in fact look at the blog. By taking those numbers, and adjusting our average daily unique visitors, I think we've got a more accurate estimate of how many people read the blog in total. Of the respondents to our one-day poll:
Now, considering that the combined population of Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater is 86,438, at least 1/4 of which are children under the age of 15 (and probably have preferred activities other than hanging out on OlyBlog), putting the adult population at roughly 64,828. Thus, OlyBlog readership constitutes somewhere between 8-9% of the adult population of the Greater Olympia area. I don't know about you, but I think that is remarkable. These are obviously estimates, and if anyone has better numbers, please feel free to make corrections.

These numbers also highlight...
Submitted by Rick on Tue, 02/26/2008 - 11:52am....that the problem we face really isn't with readership, it's with participation. As has been true from the beginning, people who post content are a small percentage of the total number of readers.

Here is a thought...
Submitted by security_six on Tue, 02/26/2008 - 12:11pm.I'm told The Olympian has about 32,000 daily home delivery customers, and around 40,000 delivered on Sunday. Now from what I'm told this does not include single copy, or website views.
How many of those 40,000 folks on Sunday do you think partcipate in the newspaper? Letters to the editor, online comments, calls about content or stories? Probably not a huge number.
Lots of readers, few contributors. Probably the same for Olyblog. Of course everyone can add to Olyblog. Tone of the blog aside, how many folks do you think are willing to create regular content of interest to the readership? How many will pop in now and then and put something up? How many just read?
What is your goal for regular (say 1 in 10 times a person visits) content?
What is interesting about Olyblog is that is has at least for me been an interesting sounding board for working out difficult and community dividing subjects. No, I'm not going to support all the actions at recent riots or protests, but I have a better understanding of what lead to it, and the mindset behind them.
Content is wonderful, but so is the ability to work through and sometimes beat a subject to death is also a good thing at times. I think a lot of folks, including docents have been guilty of communication that did not foster exchange of information. I know I have.
Just a few things to think about....
