Carolyn and I attended the membership meeting this afternoon. There were articulate speakers on both sides of the issue making the process better than we had anticipated. After listening to the proposed changes to bylaws, the pro/con statements, and most of the personal comments, we voted "yes" on #1 (change bylaws to an elected rather than appointed board) and "no" on #2 (hold immediate elections for an interim board). It seemed to us, when all the arguments were made, that a board elected by the membership was overdue, but that an immediate vote to install an interim board was not prudent.

In any case, we had to split before the votes were counted. Does anyone know the outcome?

It is my hope that the board (whether old or new) broadens the process to include some sort of mail-in procedure at or before the next membership meeting.

Proposition one failed very narrowly

I was told that it received 63% of the vote, 9 votes short of the 2/3's majority it needed to pass. So.... things stay the same.

Neither passed

Neither proposal passed. The first proposal fell short by a scant 6% or so, though--and probably those who who would've pushed it over didn't vote yes only because they were uncomfortable with the rushed process. I think it's clear a large enough percentage of the membership is interested in change (albeit change with due forethought). Josh made an announcement the board will probably be looking to start a committee to explore bylaws changes, including changing to an elected board, with some of the petitioners.

That's it then.

Start a committee, sure.

Om, took 'em years to replace a website.

They'll talk the talk for a short bit, but it'll go by the wayside. Nothing ever really changes at OFS, which is one reason nobody wants to be on the board, and those who have been, are generally scarred by the experience.

How was turnout?

I keep thinking, kinda pathetic that a membership of 2300 and you can't even come up with 8 folks who want to be on the board. The 'memberships' are mostly just about getting discounted movie tix.

King Kong was a very

King Kong was a very persuasive final-straw-reason for why we never bothered renewing our memberships. This was months before word ever leaked out about all the Board-Volunteer free-for-all.

hm

So what does one do to become a board member?
»

re: hm

I think you just attend a couple of meetings in a row, write a letter of intent and undergo a public interview at a meeting. Better call the office to be sure.

The Board is currently self-selecting

There's an application process that sounded fairly involved, from what I've heard, but basically it's up to the current Board to let you on or not.

From the bylaws

Any member of the Society wishing to serve as a Director must submit to the Board prior to a regularly scheduled meeting a letter of application summarizing their experience with the Society and their interest in serving on the Board, outlining any particular skills they would bring to the Board, and indicating whether they are applying for a one or two year term. Letters of application to the Board shall be posted in the lobby for not less than two weeks before the meeting at which the applicant is to be considered by the Board. The Board shall also solicit and consider member input on the applications in whatever method (letter, email, verbal testimony to the Board) is deemed appropriate by the Board. The Board shall retain the power to determine the appropriate method. Following an interview by the Board at a regularly scheduled meeting, a member may be appointed to the Board.

(They pretty much let anybody who wants to be on it, on it, unless they disagree with the current board.  That'd be a deal breaker, and I think in the past the only reason people weren't accepted once they applied.  Guess that explains a lot)
