Oly Artist Interview: baso

Basoenpen: If you were to take one poem and make a painting out of it, which would it be and what would you want the painting to look like?

baso: "churches falling amongst sharpened glass masses, creased revolutionaries realizing ancestral dream."

And it would be a collage of broken glass, bits of a torn and burnt american flag, human blood, etc.

When you're working with symbols, do you prefer to work with symbols that have been corrupted or symbols that have been redeemed?

I dont have any criteria except to try my best to express visually the things I think about. Currently our government is extremely currupt, I feel even more so than any time in my life, so I'm using more currupted symbols (swastika, dollar sign, burning cross etc.) to show what these fuckers represent. In another time, say a time of peace with a socialist government who taxed the rich properly and really had love for the people of the world, my paintings might be different...

Due to "something-or-other" all human skin pigment must be changed to acrylic paint colors. You are given your choice of colors but once the decision is made the color can never be changed again. What color would you choose? Why?

I think its fine how it is. People need to get over hating what they don't understand.
Due to some confusion on my part I had to get clarification.
Yeah, I guess I wouldn't want people to be any color other than what they already are. I was referring to racism with the answer cause thats all racism is, people hate what they don't understand, that's also why many people hate graffiti.

You're at a coffee shop looking out the window across the street. An oak framed door facing your direction materializes in the middle of the street and opens. What do you see through the door?

Looking through the door I see blood cascading down a baby blue wall.

Disturbing and Provacative

I think that this kind of art can really help stimulate discussion and awareness of the current political environment. Thanks for reporting on Baso and Baso's art on display. I'll have to check it out in person.

checkin' it out

Right on. And don't be shy about letting people know you're there to see the art.
