Thanks to all who have been tagging flickr images with real images of Olympia.
While I enjoy Enpens photos, our Olywa Flickr feed has been buried in Graffiti and tags.
Olympia is so much more an it is great to see some new images that reflect the beauty of our area as well.

Now why don't you tell me how you really feel? At any rate, that's the beauty of beauty, it's subjectivity at its most elastic. If it helps, here's my job description:
I heard a poet read
that
night
making singing shit beautiful
the Poet job
and I agree
wholeheartedly
it's our conversion.
Sounds like you took it

Submitted by enpen on Mon, 09/10/2007 - 12:06pm.Less taking it personally and more taking exception to the language of your post. Any picture taken of an aspect of Olympia is, by definition a real image of Olympia. The term "buried" has few good connotations as being buried isn't, generally speaking, desirable. Referring in contrast to pictures of things other than graffiti and dumpsters as "reflect(ing) the beauty of the area" implicitly denies those things the beauty adjective.
Of course there's more to Olympia than what I'm documenting; I'm just one person. And one of the most incredible things about the technology behind Flickr (to me) is this new ability to aggregate individual experiences into a very rich communal tapestry. What I'd love to see is for somebody to take all of the pictures filtering through OlyBlog and make a photo mosaic of Olympia. Of course, some of the pictures are copyrighted...but maybe those that are under the creative commons designation. I'd consent to all of my pictures being used to turn a profit if the proceeds went to OlyBlog, for example.

Submitted by enpen on Mon, 09/10/2007 - 12:37pm.The last bee I photographed in Olympia, I tagged "Bee," "Flower," and "Olympia Washington." Does that be represent any aspect of Olympia that is meaningful?
Sure. It means we still have bees! I hear they've been dying, or taking off for better dimensions.
Mostly I tag for flickr searching and cataloging purposes. With the amount of pictures I take of local street art the chance that any one person will actually see any one picture on OlyBlog is pretty minimal. Although, I must admit that there are occasions when I find a particularly incredible piece that I strategically place it in my uploading cue so as to maximize the chance that people on OlyBlog may see it.
How do you

Submitted by enpen on Mon, 09/10/2007 - 1:10pm.Because of the number of pictures I upload I use an uploading program (there are at least two out there) rather than uploading directly through flickr, and I make sure the image I'd like for OlyBloggers to see is the last one in the queue. Of course, chance being what it is, sometimes somebody else uploading a bunch of pictures happens to be going at the same time and the picture is never seen by OlyBloggers. C'est la vie.
Thanks

Submitted by enpen on Mon, 09/10/2007 - 12:15pm.When I first started "tagging" my pictures of graffiti in Olympia I was differentiating between tags, throw-ups and pieces. But I felt like an idiot writing "tag" in the tag field. Tag: tag. It's like some SAT analogies nightmare. Stupid language.

Submitted by Meta Hogan on Tue, 09/11/2007 - 3:58pm.I added some photos from the spring clean-up at the well. We're having another one September 29th, so if you want to be on flickr having a great time and cleaning up the artesian well, come on down!
Edit: I added them to flickr, not here.

Submitted by earball on Tue, 09/11/2007 - 10:55pm.I don't have any particular comment for or against photos of graffiti/tagging -- as long as it's interesting. I just like it when the photo stream has a variety of images. I don't want to look at images that are all of scribbles on the back of street signs any more than I want to look at endless photos of the capitol dome. Bring on the bees and the cyclists, the gardens and the streams. More people with more visual contexts making more photos (tagged "Olympia Washington", of course) make a more interesting town.
My own collection of Olympia photos, if anyone cares to peek, is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/earball/sets/72157600066432465/
