So, here is an idea: Olyblog should buy The Olympian. Last weeks reporting about the lay-offs at The Olympian has already resulted in a decrease in local reporting. The New York Times reports today about some grim times ahead for print papers. I'm sure the McClathy Company would be open for negotiations in times like this. This is no hostile takeover, but a daylight dreamers idea of a community taking back it's voice. Err, duh, we don't have any money, duh. Yeah, yeah, I know - I'm not being realistic, just dreaming.... come one.... dream with me a little. Where could we take this?? mathias

elegant idea mathias
Submitted by chad360 on Mon, 06/23/2008 - 12:36pm....I wonder if the site could be used as some sort of voc/tech related to the printing industry?
Perhaps be qualified as an off-campus educational facility for a few schools and then meet some demand in the market for "at cost" printing.
Like a community print facility for the printing needs of the various non-profits & whatnot...
I'd love to be able to work with a local print shop to produce playing cards for my D&D game, but that is a bit outside of the local commercial print-shops.
...anyways, great idea Mathias; I wonder what the corporate response would be to a serious buy-out offer put forth by a community group, like OlyBlog? I'd love to be a fly-on-the-wall at that meeting =)
if history is any guide in Olympia...
Submitted by enpen on Mon, 06/23/2008 - 12:44pm.They'd close up shop locally, run all of their printing operations out of somewhere else (Tacoma?) and sell their facility under the stipulation that no competing business be allowed to operate out of that location. I have little faith in large corporations keeping the best interests of small communities in mind when making business decisions. My money would be on them taking a loss on the equipment before they ever let it fall into the hands of a potential competitor.

So, OlyBlog couldn't go into...

I'm cool with that =).

I'd buy a share
Submitted by jlaing on Tue, 06/24/2008 - 9:52am.Let's make it a non-profit and have everyone that has a subscription own a share!
I'm ready to buy my share.
I like that idea...
Submitted by enpen on Tue, 06/24/2008 - 10:20am.Long term I would love to see OlyBlog develop as a community owned resource for Olympia and its neighbors. What we is a group of people dedicated to the 501(c)(3) filing process. I thought I would have more time for it this summer but I've quickly discovered that if I do that then I don't have time for either the poster calendar or the Free Wall. I've decided to concentrate my time on the things that improve OlyBlog's chances of both community support and being awarded grants.
How many OlyBloggers out there have experience applying for nonprofit status? Do people think that would be the best route to go for this resource? Do people think a Cooperative Corporation model would be better? Who has the time and energy for this undertaking?

If only time and energy were renewable resources.

IRS process
...maybe the OlyBlog IRS filing/nonprofit project could be a good experience for a MPA grad student in the nonprofit concentration, via TESC
Unfortunately, with the crazy economy and sparse employment opportunities, I can't afford to volunteer my time as much as I'd like to =(
What I would like to look into...
Submitted by einmaleins on Tue, 06/24/2008 - 10:53am..... is a social business model.
501 3c's are so complicated, but if we could create a buisness model that focusses on a "triple-bottom-line" and write into our codex to do good.
It'll be alot easier to setup, to run and to make decisions.
Yes, the funding part will be harder, since we can't run fundraisers, or get grants.
But I'm reading a book on social entrepeneurship right now and am very intrigued in the process of this.
Inspired by people like Muhammad Yunus and the likes...
Very intriguing!!!

It's true we couldn't get grants.
