Citizens in Olympia, WA are actively boycotting the corporate sponsors of The Olympian newspaper.

Bruce Titus Automotive Group is a major corporate sponsor of The Olympian.

Writers at The Olympian, such as Matt Batcheldor, are currently engaging in a campaign to smear and lie about the City of Olympia.

Thurston County residents will be boycotting sponsor Bruce Titus Automotive until The Olympian refrains from lying about the City of Olympia

Bruce Titus Bad reviews

Lets see what some Olympia residents online have said about their experience at Bruce Titus Automotive:

"The worst service , made promises, Could not would not repair our new 2004 Jeep. Made every excuse why it wasn't broke... Something was wrong with the transmission we took it in they said it needed to warm up before the transmission would work.. 2004 at the time 5000 miles we took it to another dealer the transmission was a quart low there also was a leak and problem with a pump in the transmission.. Bad place..."

Bruce Titus Bad reviews

Lets see what some Olympia residents online have said about their experience at Bruce Titus Automotive:

"I had to insist that the service dept check out a transmission problem in a new Chrysler 300m that I had bought from this dealer less that a month before. I was told that the transmission was in a learning mode and that I would have to "live with" the problem. The problem was finally resolved by taking the car to another Chrysler dealer that was located 25 miles away who replace the transmission front pump. This was done after the body of the car had been damaged by the service department and the 3 attempts to repair the damage yielded a spot repair that had the texture of 400 grit sandpaper. Totally inappropriate for a brand new $40K car with less than 1000 miles! The gouge, which was through the color coat and into the soft bumper cover cost me over $700 to have repaired correctly..."

1983 Toyota truck - $800 (Craigs List)

1983 Toyota pick up truck, SR5, long bed. Manual transmission. 235 K miles. I've had the truck for 4 years and it has been a reliable vehicle for hauling yard/garden materials and trips to the dump. The truck isn't pretty - there is some rust in the bed of the truck. The engine was replaced prior to my purchase in 2003 (it's a 20R engine). The transmission sometimes shifts hard, but it always goes into gear.

76 Olds Omega - accepting reasonable offers - $1

Automatic V8 loves the highway. People love the chrome on this brilliant green beauty with lusterous white interior. Be the 3rd owner only 174 K mostly highway miles.
What's wrong with the Omega: exterior could use waxed, AC needs free-on replaced; 1 - window knob broken - window works though; passenger side armrest is missing; 1 vent knob broken but all accessories on the vehicle work.
We love this car and it's a great car to drive always gets attention, but have too many and must part with something.

1959 Bread Truck - $400

1959 3/4 ton Bread Truck - Partially restored. Fiberglass front end and steel body. Rebuilt 235 in-line 6 and 4-speed manuel transmission. A little funkey -I used it lightly as a construction vehicle- might make an eye catching camper, portable shop, motorcycle carrier, etc. It hasn't been started in a few years; it will need tires and I think a leaf spring rebuild (one is "flat" in the rear)and I'm sure a few more things but in the right hands could be an pretty cool ride!

1993 Ford Taurus - $500

Hi, this is a 1993 Ford Taurus that runs. It has 149,000 miles on it. I am selling it under blue book because it is in need of some major break repairs. I know it needs calipers and rotor and I think master cylinder. I had an estimate done at three places. Conclusion: too much for me to repair. Anyway, here is a little of the good:
Runs, has all the windows and mirrors. Good exterior, decent interior (could use a cleaning), as far as I know the tires are okay, the transmission is okay, and the rest of the engine is okay. The chairs are electrically adjusted and it has power windows and locks. The radio works good, and all the break and driving lights work. I just purchased tabs a few months ago, so you are good to go for a while. The heat works in this. It has an AC; however, needs to be recharged. This has a big trunk and there is a lot of room in this car so if you are a larger person there is lots o' comfort. As far as I know there are no oil leaks. The engine looks very clean. With the exception of the breaks this has been a very reliable good running car.

1977 Saab 99 - $400

My old Saab is looking for a new home- either as parts car or ready to go with a few days of work. The starter needs to be rebuilt and a couple of the tires are showing wear but otherwise she's been a good 'ol car. It hasn't moved for a couple of years but has been covered. Interior and engine fine, newer clutch and tranny (4 speed manual). Fun little machine!

Boycotting is not my thing...

I don't want to enter into the "anti anything or anyone" fray, but I would like to submit the name of a great auto repair shop. "Cars, Inc" is located on Martin Way behind Fatso's. It doesn't look like much, but the owner and his mechanics are great and HONEST. Both of my cars go there and I took my Expedition to Chuck before a bought it, as he is the man I trust. Tell him Larry sent you.

Starting a boycott?

I think I'd prefer less of an "evidence speaks for itself" attitude around a boycott. Can we put together a specific and detailed response to Matt's latest articles about Olympia redevelopment and neighborhoods? It seems like "let's boycott their sponsors" is a lousy "answer" to an argument/position you don't agree with. It's not even an answer or response. It's merely a reaction.

Some questions:

What does the mayor of Vancouver's story about a homeless person kicking off the urban renewal project say about the values of the mayor of Vancouver? Don't pick negative values, just pick dominant values. Most of these conflicts are conflicts between differently weighted values.

Is Vancouver a worse city for the development projects they undertook? Would the homeless in Vancouver say it's become less friendly, or that now they find themselves mixing more with the rest of their neighbors?

What's your analysis of the strong/weak mayor discussion with regards to Olympia vs. Bremerton and other cities?

If you were going to write an article on local development and revitalization, and you felt like you couldn't write it in a vacuum of comparison with other comparably sized area cities, what would your approach be, and why?

I'm surprised that there hasn't been specific discussion about these things (and more) prior to calls for boycott. Maybe those are Brotherhood discussions, but if so, keep the boycott to the Brotherhood crew. Expand dialogue, not reaction.

I think the Vancouver story

I think the Vancouver story highlights the importance of having a courageous and selfless mayor. I, for one, would be happy to take one on the chin for downtown!
»

wait a minute here, people....

First, use caution when you play the "boycott" card. Parents know that you have to dole out the harshest punishment very judiciously. You can only take the X-Box away so many times before it becomes uneffective. Much like the X-Box, don't use the boycott as a threat that the community won't stand behind. Second, take a second to look at Matt Batcheldor's article. Sure, some of it was inflammatory and baseless, but some of it also rang true. I've worked downtown for over ten years and have witnessed the changes that have been happening during the decade. Increased violence, increased public drug use, increased harrassment for change, cigarettes, bus tickets, etc. It is really discouraging. Sometimes it takes a fresh set of eyes to put their finger on the problem. I know that's true at my job, a new employee often has more to offer than they realize. Sure, maybe Matt needs some help with his writing style, but ulimately many of his points are valid and should be considered. Instead of boycotting the Olympian and the businesses that support it, why not try to look to this article for ideas and allow it to bring us together to make our city better.

Marcie..

I agree with you that Matt Batcheldor's writing about Downtown Olympia is inflamatory and baseless.

I think you have some good

I think you have some good points Marcie. If you folks want to spend your energy making this town better, then do it with some focus. Do you really think that you're attacking the Olympian by targeting a company that otherwise contributes positively to the city in a great number of ways in such a second degree fashion is actually going to have an effect? No one even knows how much this company contributes to the Olympian! If a politician is corrupt because he has the support of an oil company, then the politician is the evil one, not the company! Besides the fact that this dealership is an asset to Olympia, not a detriment. Have any of you even been there? I bought my car there about half-year ago to buy my car and I can say that not only did they treat me fairly and courteously, but they had a toy drive going on as well as a food drive. When I came in a bit ago to have my oil changed they still were taking collections for the food drive. The people who helped me buy my car were all from Olympia, and with the way this town works you wouldn't want to make enemies with your neighbors. I've seen people quick to judge but some of you guys sure do take the cake. Oh, and as for the use of the logo, who the heck do you think you are using someone's logo and then dishing out the insults when they politely and neutrally ask you to take it down because it is used without permission! How would you feel if your business that you built from the ground up (slight assumption here, as the owner's name is in the title) with your name along the top of the banner has it's logo used to slander you? The least you should do is protect your company property.

Ridiculous Boycot

This has to be one of the most ridiculous items I have ever come across. First you say that there is a boycott for the spreading of lies, but you don't say what those lies are. Second, it appears from the notes above that all the gentleman did in his writing was talk about problems that were occurring in Olympia and for that you are angry that he spoke of them. Finally, you want to punish companies that have absolutely no connection to this article other than the fact that they pay for advertising in the paper. Why not boycott subscribers? Why not picket Newspaper Machines? Why not write a letter to the editor? Why not? Because that would require effort on your part. Instead you want to try to punish inoccent people at the dealerships that actually may subscribe to your idiocy if you weren't trying to injure their own pocketbooks and livelihoods. This will go nowhere fast, as it should. Your 15 minutes are up.
