Do you think Bush did the right thing regarding his Scooter decision, and, be honest, if a Democrat had gone into Iraq under the same circumstances as Bush, and if that war had been conducted with the same results, do you really believe the Republicans would support that action? And since I'm already here, do you agree with Dick Cheney that he is not a member of the Executive branch? And do you now regard Sen. Lugar as "whiney"? Also, have you read Michael D. Tanner's Leviathan on the Right : how big-government conservatism brought down the Republican revolution? While the conservatives have been busy beating the dead horse of the Clinton administration, it seems their own ship is undergoing a mutiny.

Ok I will play,

but I don't know if you will get the satisfaction you are looking for.

Do you think Bush did the right thing regarding his Scooter decision, and, be honest

This is a conditional answer as I don't have detailed info on the case, and I'm relying on the press for my info my opinion is built upon.  First, something that bubba z doesn't realize, Scooter didn't OUT anyone.  Dick Armitage is credited for outing Valerie Plame, not Scooter.  Second, if the only charge Scooter had against him was obstructing justice, then he shouldn't get much of a sentence at all.  Third, if he did perjure himself, then I wouldn't have given him a break at all.  For me, you can never ever commit perjury.  Lying under oath is the unforgiveable sin, so to speak.  But with that said, I double disagree with Bush.  If it was me, I wouldn't have commuted the sentence, but if I had chose to do something, I would have manned up and pardoned him.  Bush is trying to tip-toe through the mine field.

if a Democrat had gone into Iraq under the same circumstances as Bush, and if that war had been conducted with the same results, do you really believe the Republicans would support that action?

Are we talking about our republican representatives?  If yes, then no.  If you are asking this conservative, I support going into Iraq, and I support staying there until the job is done.  That would include, if necessary hitting Syria, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc. as well.  And I would fight this war like a war should be fought.  We have family and family of friends in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The rules of engagement are all FUBAR for our guys to operate under.  It is a receipe for losing.

do you agree with Dick Cheney that he is not a member of the Executive branch?

Yes, neither the Executive branch or the Legislative branch.

And do you now regard Sen. Lugar as "whiney"?

No opinion on Lugar, other than I don't agree with his position on the war effort.

Also, have you read Michael D. Tanner's Leviathan on the Right : how big-government conservatism brought down the Republican revolution? While the conservatives have been busy beating the dead horse of the Clinton administration, it seems their own ship is undergoing a mutiny.

No, haven't read it.

The republican party is a mess, and they made it such.  Like I have said before, if there was a libertarian candidate that had a snowball's chance in hell to win a presidency, I would vote for them.  As it is now, the Repubs only have one guy I would consider voting for and that is Thompson.

Chiming in....

I'm trying to figure out how Fred Thompson, who served about 8 years in the Senate, is now a "candidate for President of the United States.  I look at his resume says that he is (1) a lobbyist (2) an actor (3) served a term and two years before walking from the Senate.

I see Thompson has the next person to front the business interests that control this country.

We won't even go into his "character" history.

And obama comes

to the table with such a great resume!  lol

OC..

So we can both agree that it is not OK to out a CIA agent during a time of war.

Can we also agree that Government Officials outing a CIA agent during a time of war is treasonous?

Yes / No

»

Would I agree that it's treasonous in

nature?  Yes.  Does it fit a legal definition, I don't know.

But if we are talking about my opinion on treasonous activity, I think Rachel Corrie and Watada meet the burden too.

Regarding Rachel, which

Regarding Rachel, which part's treasonous? Burning a paper flag, or befriending people who happen to be Palistinian? Dr. Samir Nassrallah's home didn't have any weapons.

Libertarian

Thanks for answering my questions in a serious way, I appreciate it. I don't agree with most of what you said, but we'll probably never see eye to eye on those topics. If you would like me to go into detail point by point, I would be happy to. But my condition is this-- it would have to be elsewhere, like on a conservative Fred Thompson-friendly blog. It would be an experiment to see how tolerant they would be of me. Especially if I kept bringing up Watergate and Iran-Contra, the sex lives of Gingrich, Fred Thompson, and Rudy, and personally ridiculed the other bloggers as whiners. How long do you think I'd last on that blog?

If there is a conservative version of OlyBlog I'd sure like to see it. And if there isn't one, then why? It would almost seem as if the progressives have the blog world, while the conservatives have talk radio. Progressives have the written word, conservatives have the spoken word. Just a fleeting thought.

I'm interested in following your lack of opinion on Lugar and your observation that "The republican party is a mess, and they made it such." From your perspective, how is it a mess? I don't think you'll be able to ignore Lugar and his ilk for long, it seems the Republican elders are starting to get fed up.

I'm also intrigued by your Libertarian Party sympathies for many reasons. I frequently vote for their candidates myself. The Libertarians might share economic and gun control views with Republicans, but they also oppose our involvement in Iraq, support gay marriage, the decriminalization of drugs, and no religion in public affairs. But mostly I'm interested in how a person in law enforcement who is libertarian in political philosophy feels about his line of work if he is possibly enforcing laws he doesn't agree with. It seems like an unlikely occupation for a Libertarian.

These are all friendly honest questions, from one old guy to another

Another take...

Throwing out the labels for a moment (liberal, conservative, libertarian, et al)...

What I see of Presidential candidates, and to an extent Congressional candidates, is a desire to mold themselves after what they think a particular voter sector will admire.  The whole political movement is rather hypocritical in this respect.

Hillary Clinton and her movement are masters of following the polls.  Guliani and Thompson have gone from playboys to poster boys for the religious right in terms of what they say at a moments notice (women's rights, gay rights, etc).  I haven't been able to put my thumb on Obama, other than he is riding a wave of charisma, ala Jack Kennedy and that may be exactly what our country needs in a "leader"

We don't need a President that is into creating law and governing.  We have a Congress for that and because those representatives are elected on a local level it is intended to allow for a local say in federal politics.  As voters, we need to keep this pure.  I see people attacking Ted Kennedy, yet they live 1000s of miles away and have no say in his election.  At the same time, they are not involved enough to make rational choices in our own Senate and House seats.  I say stick to what effects you the most and let the system work.

We need serious mending of our foreign image and policy.  Our next president should be a person that can do exactly that.  Unfortunately, that doesn't necessarily serve the interests of big business who can make serious money off a world in chaos.

Real quick,

but they also oppose our involvement in Iraq,

I would differ with them on this

support gay marriage,

Although I don't support it, I'm not against it.  It's a non-issue for me.

the decriminalization of drugs, and

As I have posted here, I support that.

no religion in public affairs.

I agrre with no churches in public affairs.  But church goers can bring to the public arena issues that are important to them and their beliefs.

But mostly I'm interested in how a person in law enforcement who is libertarian in political philosophy feels about his line of work if he is possibly enforcing laws he doesn't agree with.

Lots of laws I don't agree with, but my job is to enforce all the laws while on-duty.  I can work hard to lobby for a change in those laws in off-duty.

It seems like an unlikely occupation for a Libertarian.

Nah, not really.  We all have jobs to do and sometimes our personal beliefs are in conflict.  If you can't deal with that conflict, either change your mind on the issue, or get a different job.
