Apparently there was a walkout down at OFS over the firing of the long long time operations manager. From the OFSVolunteers wiki:

The OFS Board of Directors fired Operations Manager Jeffrey Bartone on August 21st, 2007 after 21 years of service to the organization. His termination was based on complaints of "rude, abrasive, and uncooperative behavior". It is our opinion that the recent decision was not a true representation of the OFS community's wishes, due to an inadequate number of participating board members. We further feel that Jeffrey's termination was the result of the personal agendas of a few board and staff members through a calculated and opportunistic effort. Furthermore, the move included no contingency for filling the extensive job requirements of Technical Director, further highlighting a lack of responsibility on the part of the board.

...

We the projectionists, along with many other volunteers, view Jeffrey as the human face to OFS. He has personally welcomed us into the organization, appraised our interests and skills, and found us our place here. In firing Jeffrey, the board cited a number of complaints about his behavior. Many of us would not be a part of OFS today had it not been for Jeffrey. We are now willing to walk out on our volunteer shifts and to possibly end our involvement with OFS. We propose this gesture in contrast to any complaints he may have received.

"To promote the spirit of an active volunteer society among the membership" -OFS Goals

Jeffrey's termination only serves to highlight larger problems within OFS - the board is out of touch with what many of the organization’s most passionate volunteers want OFS to be. As trust in volunteers dwindles, and intent on profitability increases, volunteering at the Society becomes more like a daily grind. We seek to remind the Board that they are responsible to us, the volunteers, and demand accountability. This singular and extraordinary social organization has been an invaluable contribution to the Olympia community. Firing Jeffrey isn't the first step we've disagreed with, but it is a drastic, irreconcilable misuse of power. We're not interested in making OFS more economically viable at the expense of our core reason for being here: fun. Those who view OFS only as a business are mistaken when they expect us merely to be obedient sources of free labor.

I love that last sentence.Is

I love that last sentence.

Is the board's attempts at turning a profit the reason that stupid f'ing King Kong and V for Vendetta were some of the movies shown a few months ago?

What were some of the specific complaints about Bartone, and who made them? I'm always suspicious when people are terminated or otherwise disciplined for anonymous complaints. Who's on the board and how do they get there?

Maybe it's a good thing we didn't renew our memberships after they expired in April.

»

Agreed

I used to work with a person who made all sorts of allegations about "Anonymous Complaints" as if some secret and silent majority .. who only talked to her, was keeping a strong finger on the pulse of everything that was happening.

You know what I found out? Those complaints never happened.

It's a strict rule with me to ALWAYS ignore anonymous complaints .. and immediately discredit those who throw those kinds of complaints around.

Those kinds of people are InsaNe.

Decision to Terminate

I don't want to start any rumors, but what I heard was that this decision was made by 3 Board Members. According to the Board's operating agreement there are supposed to be 8 board members. I was told that there are currently only 5 of the required 8 members. And that two of these members "did not participate" in the decision to fire Bartone. So, basically, the three remaining Members made the decision. That's what I heard. Is the making of this decision with only 3 Board prudent? - Is it a violation of the Board's own decision making structure (which might require full participation for a decision of this nature?)
»

mediawiki

This is all explained at the above link to the OFS mediawiki and here (linked again).

According to the Board's Bylaws, it seems that one possible interpretation is that the Board does not have the authority to make decisions without at least 8 directors. Although it doesn't specifically state that's the case, I think that may be the spirit of the charter. It seems that the Board can "Transact business" with only 5 members. But should the Board be making business transactions without first attending to the lack of 8 members?

And is firing the operations director a "business transaction?" It seems like selling advertising, or financing a repair, or purchasing a new projector would be definable as "business transactions." But firing the technical operations director sounds like a major employment decision.

Lot's of angles to look at this from. I would like to hear from the Board members who made the decision, and why they felt it was necessary at this time, despite the lack of planning for a replacement - and in light of the fact that it seems to have been an unpopular decision, so much so that the volunteers are striking!

»

Yep, I heard the same thing

I also heard that the decision was made by only three out of five (out of the theoretically required eight) board members. Pretty sleazy if the other board members weren't even there to vote! And don't they operate on consensus? And isn't there such a thing as a quorum?

Even if this had been the decision of the full board, as the volunteers' statement points out, it seems damned irresponsible to make this decision without a succession plan. For over two decades, Jeffrey has dedicated himself to keeping the theater running in good shape. How do they plan to replace him?

Finally, yeah, what's the deal with the recent trend toward showing every artsy/vaguely highbrow Hollywood release that screened at the multiplex two months ago? I'm a little surprised they're not showing The Bourne Ultimatum already.

the last update on their site

copy & pasted from the same OFSVolunteers wiki

To the Olympia Film Society Board of Directors: We, the volunteers currently on walkout, would like to thank you for hosting yesterday’s meeting. We would also like to recognize and express our appreciation for your voluntary work in the organization. Many issues were brought up, as we all have our own frustrations with the organization. Voicing them was long overdue, and your responses were heard. Upon consideration of the board’s position, we have determined a course of action. All the issues brought up are quite serious to us, but will be better resolved through standard OFS procedure. There is one item that we cannot leave to this process: the termination of Jeffrey Bartone. Whether intentional or not, we are convinced that the procedure followed to make this decision was flawed and needs to be remedied. We understand that fluctuations in board numbers have led to decisions made this way in the past. The severity of impact to the organization on this particular issue demands faithful adherence to the bylaws. We demand that the decision to fire Operations Manager Jeffrey Bartone be revoked, and a re-vote on the issue be taken. The re-vote, in accordance with Section 1, Article IV of the bylaws, will be decided by a board consisting of at least eight members. There will be no prior conditions to participation in the vote placed on any member. We submit this demand to the board in the hope that it will be considered with the best interests of OFS in mind.

I sent a private email over

I sent a private email over their way. In her response Ms. A. H. (Theater Manager) insists that the board and staff are 100% behind the decision, and that it was 8 years in the making.

I don't know what to make of that.

»

Hah!

I know for a fact that not everyone on the board supports this decision.

Don't know where the few paid staff stand on the issue, but many of the (longtime) volunteers have made their opinions known.

I don't doubt that somebody has been hoping and working for this decision for 8 years. Maybe they even have legitimate grievances. But this whole process just stinks!

In this town, with this

In this town, with this population, they can't find enough people to fill the 8 seats on an artsy fartsy indy film society board? I've never been this stunned in my life.

Maybe it's people knowing

Maybe it's people knowing they don't want to work with the members currently presiding?

First, I've been involved

First, I've been involved with OFS for a few years. Not super involved, mind you, but enough to know some things. I have been meeting with the folks who are doing the walkout. They are extremely unhappy about losing Jeffrey. To them, he was almost like the Film Society itself. Over the years, he has given help to the theater more then what his job required. He was always supportive of the Film Society's roots - showcasing weird, not often seen films and artists not often represented in the community. This is in accord with the Film Society's mission statement. To many current OFS volunteers, Jeffrey's presence was synonymous with what OFS had long represented, but has in recent years, faltered on.

Indeed, the films in recent years have often been abysmal. A lot of us volunteers have felt that way. This was my chief complaint. Why were we showing V for Vendetta and Corpse Bride and Lassie and much other mainstream faire? Although I was unhappy with films such as these, I came to make a rationalization of why such films were shown. Last year, I started reading about Arts Non-Profit management, and these books often said that they way to financial security was to host events that would bring in enough money to support the organization while allowing the organization to focus on presenting more experimental and less-popular works. In this regard, I believe the Olympia Film Society has failed. Most of the movies they show these days are mainstream. If they aren't, they are dull dramas or agit-documentaries.

I've been to a few film selection meetings and always found myself disappointed by the results. Even if participants did bring up interesting movies to show at the theater, rarely were these suggestions actually used. Instead you get, for instance in the latest guide, the re-make of Hairspray. Why not show the original Hairspray, which is much more subversive, funny and doesn't feature John Travolta in a fat suit? I would think OFS would want to show the original, especially given there is a new print. From what I've seen, showing these mainstream Hollywood films often doesn't bring that many people in. I've been a lobby supervisor and concessionaire for over two years. My disappointment with OFS grows with each subsequent program guide.

As for Jeffrey, the board will unlikely give a re-vote, and even if they did, there decision will remain the same as the last.

»

Domenica, I think you're absolutely right

Domenica, I think you're absolutely right about the lousy generic programming and the rationale behind it.

Unfortunately, the apparent focus on money has taken over OFS and taken it away from its mission: to challenge and surprise us with films we won't see anywhere else. This shift has driven me away, and probably others from the core audience, based on all the complaints I've heard over the last couple of years. Even the volunteers I know are contemptuous of the selections they're projecting or selling tickets for. (I admit that I've never attended a programming meeting myself. Maybe we should've coordinated a takeover.) Film Fest still delivers some gems - the obscure, the bizarre, the unseen classic - but then, OFF has a different programming committee.

I also share your opinion that the board is unlikely to re-vote. But the volunteers are unlikely to back down. So what the heck is going to happen to OFS?

hey Domenica!

I found a bunch of videos from the Experimental Music Festival you put on YouTube and have been trying to think of how best to feature them here on OlyBlog. Any preferences on the matter?

And now back to something completely different...

»

I still want to know what

I still want to know what the specific complaints are and who's making them. I also want to know how people become board members in the first place. How many people are paid employees and what's the Power Structure?

Finally, who should shoulder the blame: Them for showing Peter Jackson's King Kong, or me for actually going to see most of it (it's the only movie I've ever walked out on.)

It's a fair call, but Society's to blame. ~ Right! We'll be charging them too!

I knew it was really bad

I knew it was really bad when I made a joke to friends who volunteer there about the upcoming screening of Spider-Man 3... and they believed me.

I would like to know the answers to your questions, too.

Eh

Spiderman 3 wasn't that great anyway.  ;)

complaints of "rude, abrasive, and uncooperative behavior"

I don't know diddly squat about OFS, but I know subjective criticism when I see it.

When I was voted in as President of a home owners association by a majority of 14 people attending a meeting (30 total owners), the aftermath, when I tried to enforce the covenants (the former president was the worst offender) all of a sudden all this subjective criticism started up and there was a new election. "Abrasive" is a favorite of mine.  "Rude" is number two on my list.  Is someone abrasive or rude because they silently ignore rules on commons areas?  You catch my drift.

I'll be watching this to see how it developes, but I smell special interest here.

ofs

hi everybody. my name is rafael and i have volunteered at ofs since i have moved here two years ago. my partner has been involved for many years and knows jeffery pretty well. i want to weigh in with our collective opinion so that there isn't any wild rumors floating around. it is our observation that on the one hand jeffery certainly has shown negative behavior in the past and probably some offenses have been quite extreme. he also has a long standing feud with at least one person heavily involved in ofs and talks about firing have been in the making for many years. i personally feel that the way they dealt with it is very irrresponsible. on the other hand jeffery kind of currently is and has stood for ofs as an awesome community organization OPEN TO ALL and is very passionate about that(not to say that others are not). he certainly has made his mark on ofs positive and negative and has built alot of what ofs is. that's twenty one years of many hours for little pay (or at least less than his work is worth as well as the other staff). ofs supposedly is collectively and cooperatively managed and has many high ideals inplace from past people involved. this has often not been the case because of feuds and many people being uncooperative board and staff. when my partner complained of unfair and mean spirited treatment from another staff person she felt forced to quit because these complaints were NEVER addressed by the organization. the staff never collectively addressed the situation, the board never looked into the matter, and even the person involved never even acknowledged her feelings. ofs in general is in great disrepair. it seems as though the decision making body is generally uncooperative as it has been suggested of jeffery. so anyway. please please get involved if you care about ofs. if you don't like the movies try and go to a couple of planning meetings. or make a team with friends who like the same kind of movies and take turns going to them to make sure we're showing movies that you will enjoy that are crazy or weird or incredible. it is not hard to join the board of directors and takes little effort. i think (and i may be wrong) that you have attend a certain number of board meetings and you're in. also volunteer in the theater! it's fun you'll make friends and you can personally be responsible for the community's movie going experience. thanks and be kind to your volunteer coordinator.

ps ofs

ps- i liked v for vendetta! it was subversive and based on a cool comic book. yes it is hollywood so was fight club. also this is my own personal paranoid opinion and wild rumor. this is nothing more than a power grab orchestrated by elements in the theater that want to turn a profit and have ideas like turning the theater into a bar (as if there weren't already a million bars downtown). there has been alot more "beer gardens" over the past year or so...you catch my drift.
»

I liked it too!

I just didn't see why it should occupy one of a limited number of slots at the capitol theater, when it had just had a big run at Lacey Cinemas a couple months earlier. Showing V for Vendetta means one less slot for a film we never got a chance to see anywhere.

If it were just one movie like this, I wouldn't care, but it's been a gradually increasing trend over the last couple of years. We're like frogs in a pot. I didn't notice until it was well underway.

With the bigger theaters in town showing a wider variety of "art-house" flicks, OFS is no longer differentiating itself. Just this summer OFS screened Grindhouse, Bridge to Terabithia, Hot Fuzz, 28 Weeks Later, A Mighty Heart, Sicko (OK I didn't expect OFS to pass that one up) - all of which got significant time at chain multiplexes, so it starts to seem like OFS is a cheaper version of the same ol' same with better popcorn and less comfortable seats.

You're absolutely right, though, that if I'm complaining I really ought to get involved and try to change it. Honestly, if OFS got back to its original mission (as Domenica pointed out earlier) of showcasing the unusual/obscure/unseen, I would happily make them my main charitable donation every year.

Thanks for sharing your perspective on this mess.

In the past, I tried to

In the past, I tried to reason why OFS would show films such as V for Vendetta (which wasn't that bad of a movie in the first place). I figured their reasoning was that the message behind the movie was an important one, and this reason was enough to show a movie even if it had previously played at a mainstream theater. Also, good films can be mainstream too, obviously. I think those deserve play at OFS, occasionally. I also infered that they figured it would bring in a sizable crowd. As I have mentioned before, crowds for these films have usually been middling. Also, the reason they have shown films like Lassie and Wallace and Gromit before was because they wanted to show quality children's films, which is also why they are showing Ratoutille in next few weeks. While Ratatouille is a great children's film, I still don't think it should be shown at OFS, or at least, the instances of such films playing at OFS should be dwarfed by more obscure and underground films. A theater such as the Grand Illusion in Seattle is a great example of a succesful, underground theater. I don't mind mainstream films occasionally at OFS, but not so often as they are show nowadays. It is depressing and doesn't make me as into volunteering.

N is for Narrow, V is for View, C is for Change.

I am embarrassed to live in this era.

And right now, I am embarrassed to say I live in Olympia.

I have attended more board meetings, volunteer meetings, coordinator meetings and organizational meetings in this town over the past four years than in my entire life.

When I first moved to Olympia, I was enamored with the active population, the political atmosphere, the queer politics, the amount of organizing and non-profit projects & organizations.

I was thrilled to see that people still protested, stood up for themselves and organized boycotts.

Today, this is what I see.

I see a world of GLOBAL Corporations, Consumerism & Capitalism.  I see International Oppression.  I see hate, fed by hate, in the color of hate, that fuels more hate.  I see that the middle class is a myth, that "diversity" is the biggest fucking joke to fall into the workplace/education/community since affirmative action went into action.  I see that no child left behind leaves more children behind than ever, especially if they are impoverished, children of color, immigrants, ESL families... basically anyone who isn't white, financially stable, straight and personal friends with the Bush Regime.

And I see that we're ALL FED UP WITH IT.  I see that most of us feel POWERLESS.  I see that as our backyards get smaller and smaller our cars get bigger and bigger, and the fences around those quaint little houses are taller and taller.  I see neighbors that only know each other's names because of some mis-delivered mail - that ends up back in the fucking mailbox with red pen on them stating "not at this address."

I see fear.  I smell fear.  I hear fear.

I see that as time passes in this constant state of fear and isolation, we are looking far and wide outside of our communities to have our needs met.  I see that local government is passing crazy laws that make sitting on a public sidewalks illegal because the families of those kids that weren't left behind feel "unsafe" about shopping downtown on a Sunday afternoon with all that "dangerous" activity happening downtown.  (I moved here from the New Mexico Ghetto... ya'll have NO idea how good you have it in this town.)

The result of all that I see?

We are pitted against each other.  We all feel that there's nothing that we can do to bring Bush down, there is nothing that we can do to change Globalization (I mean, shit, did you make it to 2006 TESC Graduation?  The Governor addressed the graduates as the next wave in globalization... ouch.)  There is nothing that we can do about tokenizing, homophobia, heterosexism, poverty, child abuse, THE LACK OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR ALL... and on and on and on....

And so we wage war against each other.  The Transsexual/Transgender community hates the Lesbians, and the Lesbians won't see the evolution of sex and gender.  The gay men keep to themselves and move on to the more expensive condos and ignore what's happening to the entire community.

People of Color are turning their backs on Mixed People, and white people... they STILL will not see that racism is real, and happening, and WELL alive here in Olympia.  (How many people of color actually sit on the "unity in the community" shelf???)

Poor people hate each other for what the other has.  They have section 8 and don't have to pay rent.  She gets child support, and only has to work part time.  He gets free childcare.  They get more food stamps.  She only got the job because her mother works there.  And NONE of them are making their bills, and ALL of them are trying to, and they end up hating each other and fighting with each other and not doing anything about what's REALLY going on.

Bitch and Moan.  Bitch and Moan.

The Pacific Northwest is SOOOO fucking full of itself it's depressing.  It's not the rain.  It's the lack of empathy, and compassion and COMMUNITY.

Protesting the decision and boycotting OFS is not the answer.  You really think you can do better?  Join the Board; see how demanding it is for yourself.  It's not a walk in the park, and it's not just one little hour a month to go to a meeting.  Think you can start a better organization?  Why not volunteer more at the one that exists, and has been STRUGGLING to exist for years.  Any idea how under budget they are?  Any idea WHY the beer garden happens?  If you have so many ideas, why not INCORPORATE THEM and be an agent of change, instead of a pain the in the ass?

As far as Jeff goes, Jeff had his own relationship with the board, and the staff.  Jeff has been approached for YEARS about the numerous complaints that have been filed by many people, not just Anonymous.  This is not a new issue; this is not a fake issue.  There is a point when people deserve to be treated with respect, no matter how long someone has worked at a place, no matter how much blood, sweat and time they have put in... No matter how big their ego is.  Jeff had many opportunities to take the feedback that was offered to him.

Saying that the complaints are not real is like saying that a woman deserves to be beaten or raped.  You are saying that small voices don't matter, and that everyone should have loud voices that are backed up by hundreds of other loud voices to matter.

Anonymous complaints are valid.  There is a reason people don't want to attach their names all the time.  Shit, I'd be afraid if I wanted to file a complaint if this is the way it would be received.

Stand up people.  Do something bigger than bitching and meeting to bitch and finding ways to bitch in public in large groups.  If you feel like the decision was unfair, then comfort Jeff.  Tell him that you support him.  And tell the board you do not support the decision they made.  Apply for the open positions, recruit people to apply for the positions.  Get more involved instead of standing aside with your complaints and refusal to support an organization that supports Olympia to the fullest of it's capacity.

I "complain" about OFS

I "complain" about OFS because I want it to be better. I love OFS dearly and that is why I volunteer. I don't think any of the folks in the walkout want a new film society AT ALL. They love the theater. We are all volunteers, and we do it because we believe in the organization. There is nothing wrong with criticizing an organization - it is necessary for improvements. Many of us miss the days when there were more "strange and unusual" programming at OFS. I won't speak on the Jeff issue, because I don't know where I stand on that. Yes, I think more people should go to the film programming meetings. Also, for the record, I think the beer gardens are a good idea. Also, the "Something Strange" film nights that just started are AWESOME and a step in the right direction.

Anonymous complaints are

Anonymous complaints are valid

Anonymous complaints reek. The accused is not able to properly defend themselves. If the truth is being told then why hide?

And are you seriously suggesting that if someone disagrees with you, or supports something you're against, that they're narrow? (Based on your title.) That is what's narrow.

Congratulations on living in Olympia for four years. I've lived here most of thirty-four and there are others who've more than doubled that.

»

Let's try to stay positive

havaviv, I agree with your support of anonymous complainers- this is valid and important. At the same time, I might point out that complaining about complainers is still just complaining. (my writing thar makes me complicit in this loop ;^0 )

I've not been involved with OFS, though I've often wished that there was room for it in my life. Jeffrey is one of the first people I met when I moved here in 1996, and though I don't hang out with him on a regular basis, I consider him a colleague and friend, which biases my view. Perhaps the volunteers and projectionists share this bias.

He's a uniquely gifted and compassionate individual whose legacy is indelible regardless of his employment status. His can-do spirit and tireless commitment have made lasting changes to the organization and the film scene in Olympia. (digital projection, Dolby sound) I guarantee that oodles of employers locally are pining for someone with his level of expertise and willingness to tackle seemingly insurmountable challenges.

If this was an end-around by the board to get rid of a dissenting voice, then shame on them. Its incumbent upon them to listen to people like Jeffrey and build a wide consensus. Most likely, however, its a combination of things.

One last thing- I empathize with those who have a problem with Jeffrey. Labeling anyone a newcomer is counterproductive.

However, I've personally witnessed at no fewer than 10 special events how problems stemming largely from: irresponsible planning, poor communication and last minute flawed judgment calls by organizers are dumped on Jeffrey. This is why, if you see him at an event, he's the one running up and down the stairs with a flashlight sustaining life in the technology a volunteer driven limited budget organization has provided.
