Apr 19 2008 - 7:30pm Apr 19 2008 - 10:00pm Below is a description and more information on Saturday's performance. Drama is the first word to describe Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio, Elijah, one of the great choral masterpieces of all time. Masterworks Choral Ensemble, an 80-voice community choir, performs Elijah with guest soloists and a 40-member orchestra 7:30pm on Saturday, April 19, at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts. Elijah is the story of the biblical prophet, and includes clashes with kings, extraordinary miracles, visitation by angels, and Elijah’s ascension to heaven on a flaming chariot. Baritone soloist Michael Dudley’s commanding presence and beautiful voice bring the character of Elijah to life. Dudley has performed with the Seattle, Tacoma, and Bellevue Operas. As part of this concert, Masterworks presents its Salute to the Arts award to Bernard “Bud” Johansen. Each year Masterworks recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions toward fostering the arts in the South Sound area. Bud Johansen is a leader in promoting dance as a performance art in Southwest Washington. For more than 35 years he has served the arts community as instructor, performer, choreographer, and director with Johansen School of Ballet, Ballet Northwest, and The Evergreen State College. Masterworks Choral Ensemble is dedicated to performance, community service, music education, and leadership in the arts. Masterworks’ mission is to perform sacred and secular choral, orchestral, and newly commissioned works; to collaborate with other arts groups; to participate in community service activities; and to provide a leadership role in developing, sponsoring, and broadening the vocal arts. Tickets for this concert are $18 for adults and $11 for students and are available at the Washington Center Box Office, 512 Washington Street SE, Olympia, or by calling 360-753-8586.
