Hiya All--

WOW, I just got shocked!

>bad pun I know<

I was reading JanetB when this hit me:

"...[Olympia Cops]killed 9 Olympia residents with Tasers since February"

O-Blog Posse, OlyCop, >anyone<...is this true? I'm almost afraid to ask... :-(

»

That's freedom of speech for ya!

Hey, did you also know that the birth control pill kills children? And God blesses bulldozers? And all homeless people are sex offenders? If the first amendment protects our right to say it, it must be true, right?

Glad you're reading for context, Chad. Be especially careful when you're reading McClatchy publications.

It's not what you think.

It's not what you think. They all died from Subdural Hematomas, that is, they had their skulls cracked.

Well, they would have, if it was true, which it isn't. God Bless Ancient Drunk Loggers!

That is the most blatent example of false advertising since my suit against the movie The NeverEnding Story

It did not happen and for

It did not happen and for all the comments about The Olympian recently, you'd think Olyblog would rise above it.

Seriously it's become thick

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry.

I love the humor on OlyBlog...

...but as with any powerful tool, there's a risk attached.

Reading Comprehension

It's important to read the whole paragraph, and see how it all fits together. See, there's this thing called "irony," that's not always meant to be funny, so I don't really care if you didn't laugh uproariously, but this irony, which sometimes takes the form of exaggeration, is occasionally used to make a point. Irony always relies on context, which makes comprehension of irony difficult or impossible if a reader has trouble understanding context. In such cases, the irony is worse than useless, as demonstrated by my recent extremely hyperbolic example of a misstatement (cops killing five or six more people with Tasers in Oly than they actually have), that was nevertheless not extreme enough to be understood as hyperbolic, yet again reminding me why posting on here, except for announcements of events, is a big waste of time. Except when I'm complaining about the McClatchy corporation. Then, it's still a big waste of time, but it's fun, so it's worth it. Explaining irony is not.

»

I'm going to stop now.

I'm not going for heat but I am not doing well with what I'm going for so I'm going to quit now.

So yeah, shuttin up.

»

whoa, problem?

Hiya All,

I thought it was true--

Didn't think it was funny or anything, and didn't get it as a joke--

so, :-)

>blah<

PS: since the search doesn't work on OlyBlog (at least not for me), I'd like someone to post a link to JanetB's original post...I have to go back & check it out--

I just realized that Janet B was dissing me about reading for context (which I think is lame), and I wanna read that again--

Here is the comment.Here is

Here is the comment.

Here is the parent post.

She was trying to compare an opinion (Jim Hampton's) to a false fact (Taser statement).  I also didn't see the irony, but then again, irony is easily lost in text only conversations.

»

OK, Thanks--

I'm glad it didn't happen...

...and I apologize if my not getting it offended anyone (esp Janet B)--

I used the search to try to find "taser" but it work, so...thxs EG :-)

Hey Chad..

Didja hear about that Tenino cop that was busted for zapping his buddy in the peepee with his issued taser? It was all up on YouTube. Ill post the vid later..(If you type Tenino into Google News, its the first thing that comes up..)
»

LOL

Yeah I saw that video and was wondering if it would pop up on the blog. Unprofessional but he was reprimanded for it due to it being a department issued tool. It was really kind of funny though. If he had died it would have been really bad though, and the cop should have known better. I read a few Daily O comments though saying he should have been fired....seemed a little severe but eh.
»

I still cant find that vid..

I wouldnt say fire the guy. Reprimand would be fine. "Boys will be boys.."(seriously now, in the wee-wee, why put it there?..Its like those fellas that light their butt gas on fire) Females just dont do that sort of thing..
»

Testosterone = sudden bursts

Testosterone = sudden bursts of mental stupidity

Apparently the guy asked his buddy (the cop) to tase him in his "boy parts". Why? Dunno. What kind of man would ask for that? Well...Not this one, that's for DANG sure.

Me neither..

Me neither..

Bummer

The video has been made private by the user (big shock) and all of the links that lead to it no longer work.
»

hey buddy!

>grin< that is SO Tenino... ...and thanks for making a joke.
»

Whats up Chad..

You OK from the wreck?

Got skin?

perils..

Im so lucky I havent wrecked yet (knock-knock). Traffic still sketches me out though (especially people blowing past yield signs). What we need are some bike/ped overpasses for places like Martin Way or Pacific Ave. Good to hear you are on the mend..
»

May I reiterate?

I wasn't trying to be funny. I was trying to make a point, not just about Jim Hampton, but about the very poor choices the Olympian makes in deciding what letters to the editor to publish. I believe I wrote "Name-calling, racism, mockery, and inaccurate reportage of facts set a poor tone for a community forum." And then I provided an example that I never dreamed anyone would take seriously.

I am sorry to say I have seen all of those things, name-calling, racism, mockery, and inaccurate reportage of fact, represented in LTEs in our award-winning hometown rag. I think we can all do better. I left a very polite and completely unironic (I didn't want to confuse him) phone message for Mike Oakland to inquire about civility standards for their LTEs... for instance, do any exist? But he hasn't called me back. I'll let you know what he tells me if he does, in fact, have anything to say about this.

Will text-based communication prove to be the death of irony, hyperbole, subtlety, and all that good stuff literature majors love? I hope not... then again, it appears that saying anything that can be misinterpreted out of context can lead to a lot of confusion, and a huge waste of time.
