For the last 5 years I have been following the band Sour Owl. Actually, I was not following the band, but the bands drummer, Scotty Peoples. His style was like no other musician. Real slick with an endless pocket. Perhaps the best drummer in town. After meeting this young man, I also saw he was a down to earth, humble and a very intellegent musician. As musicians came and went in that band, Scotty was a mainstay. Never really hung out with him, but he oozed cool. When I mentioned his name to friends, it seemed everyone knew of him. Not just as a killer drummer, but as a wonderful spirit and happy soul who walked everywhere with his dog.

It was early this week when I found out this great young man and super talented musician has moved on to Portland to search the greener grasses of a big city. I always used to wonder why he was here. He could play anywhere. I was bummed when my friend told me but at the same time I was excited for Scotty. Oly didn't get a chance to trap him amidst all of the rest of us too scared, complacent or incapable of following through with our music dreams. GOOD FOR SCOTTY!!

Wednesday of this week when at M6K I ran into my buddy who informed me Scotty had not been allowed to get his drums before he moved. That the drums are being sold from under him. That a member of Sour Owl has, in fact, stolen them. When I heard this, it angered me. As a "kind of" musician, it just solidifies my thoughts of the music scene and musicians here, IT SUCKS! The musicians here, none of whom could hold a candle to the talents of Scotty, talk more crap, act so scandalous and just do not understand the actions of a real musician because noone here is one. It's a shame. Shame on Sour Owl.

I have emailed Scotty and offered to buy him a drumset. In the time I've known of him, he has inspired all of us more than anything else he has done. The word is that young man has said nothing negative about anyone and I know he could and very much SHOULD have. All us musicians here in Olympia deserve it.

Hey!

I'm a nice guy! I've been screwed over by past band mates before! Would you buy me a PA and pitch in everyones share of the van they were supposed to pay when we got back from tour?

That would be sweet.

Olympia has the music scene of a major city packed into a place slightly bigger than towns like Yelm. It doesn't suck. Sometimes people suck though, but you can fix all that OlyMusicSucks by buying this PA

http://www.CheapBandGear.com/Complete_PA_System_5500_Watts_p/pasys10.htm

And by chipping in the $400 dollars a certain bassist was supposed to give me before they took off to south america with their new girlfriend.

Be Olympia's music scene saviour OlyMusicSucks! I believe in you!

Did you even READ the blog?

Hey there. Thanks for your reply. No. I will not chip in anything. I don't even know who you are. If you read the blog and understood it, you would have understood the impact the young man I wrote about to the music scene. This scene is slack. No musicians stood out like Mr. Peoples. Noone. He did not deserve what happened to him. To quit a band and have ex-bandmates upset about it is one thing, but for that band to be so upset that they steal instruments equalling over 10 times as much as you lost because the best drummer in town moved on is a bit bitch to me. Sure everyone gets screwed. I witnessed Scotty getting screwed for years playing in a band with inadequate musicians. I have to be a huge, I mean HUGE fan of you to be moved enough to offer anything. I am a huge fan of Scotty Peoples. Always have been and will always be. And just so you know, Scotty did return my email and turned down the offer. That is the kind of spirit that has never been a part of Olympia's music scene. And now Scotty is gone, it never will be and I've been here almost 45 years. Good luck to you. Hope all works out and by all means, keep the faith.

music scene in Olympia

The so called "music scene" in Olympia is going the way of the Dinosaur. Now it's primarily the same old bands and faces playing the same tunes at the same venues, over and over, Crimson and Clover. Anyone with a three chord act can call themselves Independent (that means they dont have a real recording contract) and get a gig at the Eastside. From what I've seen 99% of the bands downtown lack the right combination for success, which is talent AND showmanship. But Olympians and the clackers downtown dont necessarily equate success with monetary gain. Playing the same old tunes, for the same old group of fans/friends, is obviosly their definition of success. Look Ma! I'm a rocker! The Olympia music scene needs an enema.
