Today the Olympian has a poll marking 5 years since we invaded Iraq - please vote.

next time we should have our own poll

instead of helping the competition.

Considering Olyblog doesn't accept advertising

What is the competition?
»

We're a news source, they're a news source.

While we may not be competing for money, we are competing. If the Olympian did a better job at honestly covering local issues, OlyBlog might not exist.

Trust me when I tell you

The Olympian can live with being "scooped".  Taking millions of dollars out of the advertising market might catch their attention, though.

Hmmmm....

I can't say that I think too much of the Olympian's polling techniques, considering that people can apparently vote as many times as they're willing to reload... but I guess the O's after hits, not accuracy, anyway?

The vast majority of online polls

are pretty worthless.
»

hmmm

Do you have some poll data to back that up?

Har har

The worth of a poll (to me) is contingent on it's genalizability. A poll of a randomly selected sample of the population reflects the population in general (within a specified margin of error). I don't know what population is represented by the voluntary participants of most online polls. Perhpas "worthless" is a bit harsh. "Not very informative" or "difficult to interpret" is a better way to put it. Personlly, I think they are rarely worthy of news coverage.

Damn, you're smart!

I guess I should have had another cup of coffee before statistics class, because I apparently slept right through the lecture on genalizability. D'oh! Fortunately, it wasn't on the test!

self-referral...

...is always statistically invalid, but I guess entertaining nonetheless =)
