Every year, Time Magazine exercises its privilege to name the "Person of the Year." Hitler, Stalin, the computer, Bill Clinton, and even "You" have been persons of the year. Who is your candidate for the hyperlocal person of the year? No arguments please, just names and the reason they deserve the recognition.

I nominate...

Camp Quixote.

This group of folks had all of the cards stacked against them. No one wanted them to succeed and they looked that in the face and forged ahead. It started for them as a scary week at the beginning of February where a police raid seemed constantly imminent, everyone (politicians, The Olympian, a large number of citizens) publicly scorned them, called them criminals, addicts and child molesters, and told them they didn't belong in this community. Now today they have been officially recognized by two cities (Olympia and Tumwater) that were skeptical and reacted harshly in the beginning, they are having no trouble finding host congregations, and the people in the neighborhoods surrounding the new hosts are welcoming, as opposed to angry about their presence.

These people at Camp Quixote, no matter what, are my people of the year. They taught our community a lesson. A lesson about what it means to be a community, what it means to pull together and help one another, to truly care about one another. The most important thing they taught us was that human beings are only limited by the constraints of physics. That even a group of people who have nothing can achieve seemingly impossible things at great odds with nothing but sheer will keeping them going. I know I learned a valuable lesson through it all, and I have my friends at the camp to thank for it. I learned that when people come together and organize in order to assert their place in the process, they cannot be defeated. Camp Quixote is one of the things that gives me hope for the future, and I will never forget them.

And I can't tell you how strange it makes me feel when I actually LIKE an Olympian editorial.

Here's to building community.

Camp Quixote

Camp Quixote, and all of the volunteers (including Rob Richards) who have worked so hard to make it a success, are definitely worthy nominees.

TJ Johnson

I nominate City Council Member TJ Johnson because of his courageous and principled work on behalf of the citizens of Olympia. He has demonstrated outstanding leadership and a dedication to improving the city far into the future. In particular his work with the PMR movement garners him my nomination. It is a public servant's duty to oppose the blatantly wrongful and illegal actions of our government. TJ stood up and did his job. For this, he deserves to be Olympia's Person of the Year 2007.

ditto, but add Laura Ware

Because for good or for ill, they defined and embodied city wide politics this year.

lol

I am really never gonna live that down, am I Jim? I'll get to work on that top 10 real soon.

I nominate Mark Foutch. That man has put a lot of his time and energy into this city and is stepping down after all this time.

I agree with Norm

and count my vote as a second on Mayor Foutch.

Hope you don't mind...

Good choice, Mark.

naw

I don't mind, love a good joke, and that was one of my funnier moments in life, no doubt.

Olympian editorial on Camp Q

I agree with Rob and will have more to say on this subject later. For now, check out the Olympian's editorial this morning.

the nominees

So for clarity, as of now, is it between "Camp Quixote", CM TJ Johnson, the CMs TJ Johnson and Laura Ware combo, and Mayor Mark Foutch?

I don't envy the decision maker.

I'll throw my two cents in...

...for Camp Quixote!  Those guys rock.

The Canaanite's Call

How about

The people who went out and made sure things kept going during the storm?  Emergency first responders and utility crews?  Not a single person per se but a notable group.  And a lot less annoying than TJ...  I don't think highly of Foutch either for that matter.

I 2nd that Nomination

Good thoughts Six.

My choices

I'm going to nominate two individuals who not only represent themselves with grace, morals and honor but they represent us all.  Two humanitarians who care for others more themselves, who care about everyone and represent all that is good, decent and correct.  My nominations for People of the Year, George W. Bush and Richard Cheney!

I know we're not supposed to

I know we're not supposed to argue over nominations here, but this is supposed to be local people. I don't think either of them have even been to Olympia.

that sparked an image

Bush and Cheney adrift on the FLOD with only caimans to plead with for their safe return to shore...

Caimans and politicians

Perhaps our local caimans could negotiate for a presidential pardon, like these birds received.

Happy New Year to ya.

Thanks Norm

It's the holiday season, time for some laughter and good times.  I'll work on my delivery over the next year.

Happy New Year to you sir.  Hope all is well.
