Sometimes I have a tough time with anger expressed online, here on OlyBlog. I get frustrated when I don't understand what I'm reading, when I see us corner and bash away at each other. I know some people don't post at all here because they understandably fear being beaten up for it.

I really do believe that there is a way for us all to civilly disagree. I think there is a way to comunicate without trying to shame and harm each other. I also believe that sometimes the most beautiful sentence in the world is "I don't know". We may think we know each other's motivations, we may think we can take another person's inventory, but truly......often we don't know. If only we could admit that rather than making false assumptions and yelling at each other.

So, speaking for myself, I'm working on admitting I don't know when I don't know. I'm going to stay out of battles and if I find that I can't even stand to read some comment threads, I'll let the other docents know. I'm going to remember that I don't need to defend myself here, that there is a world beyond these debates, and that we are all just people living our lives.

And yes, this really is an open thread, you don't need to stick to this theme I've opened with. I myself can barely believe that it is already November. Love those gorgeous autumn leaves drifting around town.

One reason I like November.

What I like about November

Any recipe suggestions?

Two questions

How waterlogged are they? And are you a strict vegetarian?
»

I don't know my mushrooms.

I don't know my mushrooms. My blue-ringer history is best left in the past, and I just blindly eat whatever sliced mushrooms are on sale at Safeway.

So, when you're asking G if he's a vegetarian, is it because: A) You're considering sharing a recipe involving meat? B) These 'shrooms have some sort of basic Nervous System, or C) you want to warn him not to accidentally eat any spiders or aphids which might be hiding out in the fungus.

I can finally post comments!

1. Not waterlogged at all.

2. I'm an omnivore.

Check out this simple chanterelle recipe

...not that G needs a simple recipe, no no.

2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter

2 tablespoons olive oil

8 ounces fresh chanterelle mushrooms, quartered if large

1 teaspoon minced shallot

1 garlic clove, minced

Melt butter with oil in heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms; sauté until lightly browned, about 6 minutes. Add shallot and garlic; sauté 2 minutes longer. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

»

Man Oh Man!

I sure wish I knew how to find me some of those chanterelles so I could try this recipe!  All my favorite things!  Butter, garlic, shallots, mushrooms, olive oil!  I'd probably drizzle a good Riesling over the top before serving it too!  MMM!

Okay, what Deb said...

Then I would throw in a little fresh thyme, and a couple of eggs and scramble them. Not too many eggs, because you really want to taste the chantrelles. OR... What Deb said, except with thyme, then I would add chicken broth and milk, half and half or whipping cream, depending on how fat you think you are, for a cream of chantrelle soup. Maybe with a little sherry. OR... what Deb said, but with a little thyme or maybe sage, and then add some toasted bread cubes, and stuff it into a chicken and roast it. Chantrelle stuffing.... yum.

How about glazing it in a

How about glazing it in a pinot noir syrup and then wrap them up with a very slow-cooked pot roast? All I've been having the last few nights are pasta or rice.

Enough Already!

All you're doing is antagonizing those of us who don't know where to find these enchanted wonders!  My mouth is watering, especially for your roast idea Merwyn, and I am now forced to go to the cafeteria and throw some every day variety of mushroom on a salad now & pretend!  ;-)

You've still got nothing to

You've still got nothing to be jealous of, I get to go home soon for lunch and have leftover Spaghetti and Ragu.

I hate spaghetti, but Tammy loves it, so sometimes I'm nice and make it.

I'd Happily Join You!

I love spaghetti and I'm sick of hospital food!  LOL!

I'll make sure and take a picture of my roast

and post it here. I can already taste it, with a side of soup.

Bully!

Fine.  Go ahead & post a picture, but if you go into a graphic description of it, I'm hunting you down!

Instead of quickly forgotten

Instead of quickly forgotten New Years Resolutions, how about monthly resolutions, with follow ups and progress reports?

More people should post their dreams like OperaGirl did...it doesn't even have to be Olyblog specific. I understand that if a person keeps a notebook at bedside and jots things down the moment they awake from a dream, that they remember them better and that it aids in having lucidity more often.

There's one thing I don't

There's one thing I don't have patience for.

What, just one thing?

Alright, one of the many things I don't have patience for is bad customer service. Having worked in the food service until my mid-20s I understand that sometimes things get crowded and chaotic. For example, yesterday I was at the new(ish) Starbucks on Cooper Pt and Mud Bay. It took twenty minutes from the moment I got in line until I got my coffee. I don't know if they were unprepared, or if something out of the ordinary happened to put them in a crunch, but it doesn't matter because every last person behind the counter was busting their tail trying to get everyone taken care of quickly and efficiently.

I'm not talking about situations like that. Rather I'm thinking more of what happened about an hour ago. I thought I'd get a chai at a certain locally-owned coffee establishment known for recently asking their patrons to not let the neighbor businessman see them. There was someone already at the counter. Her order was already taken, the money had already been transacted. She and the girl behind the counter were chitting, chatting, gabbing and talking. They kept it up while I waited patiently for two minutes. When the cashier continued to ignore me I decided to share my money elsewhere.

I went to the Starbucks around the corner where I received prompt and courteous service. I took part in the game of Capitalism, trading some cash in for a mass-produced product probably harvested by underpaid children. I even tipped the barista.

True, compared to Abu Graib I should be happy enough if the local place made me wait an hour and then spat in my drink...but nothing beats the satisfaction of being privileged enough to enjoy a unnecessary yet desired product.

Damn the United States! I wish I may never hear of the United States again!

It's funny this happened to

It's funny this happened to you because the same thing happened to me as well a while back!  I wonder if it was the same person.  Oh but my twist is that I was the only one waiting for them to finish their conversation and finally she looked at me with a "What?  What do you need" look.  Um, ya.

Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.  ~Ludwig van Beethoven

I've had this happen, too, many many times

As much as I admire this particular local business in general, I can't get my brain around how slow their service is. It just seems inefficient to me. I prefer to share my money with Caffe Vita or the Olympia Coffee Roasting Company. Quick, friendly service at both joints, and great coffee to boot.

I was the only one too.

I was the only one too. There wasn't a line otherwise.

Damn the United States! I wish I may never hear of the United States again!
Philip Nolan, the man without a country

»

Same here!

I bet it is the same person too.
»

How could I forget so quickly?

Ugh! The same unhappy people just pounce all over you when you post.
»

Yeah, they're unhappy about

Yeah, they're unhappy about things thousands of miles away and want to make everyone here unhappy too.

Course, for whatever gnashing of teeth might go on here it's still not as bad (or even as ignorant) as the Olympian's comments.

Damn the United States! I wish I may never hear of the United States again!
Philip Nolan, the man without a country

»

Well, thanks for the fine example of pouncing

I couldn't possibly have underlined my point as effectively as you just did. Boy, isn't this fun?
»

Dude, if that was a pounce

Dude, if that was a pounce just think of me as T-I-Double Guh-Er. There was no biting or scratching. (Besides, I'm not unhappy.)

Your choice, I'll get you a beer or some corn on the cob sometime.

Damn the United States! I wish I may never hear of the United States again!

HA!

And it's the same unhappy people that come on the blog with their grim outlook on life. Your lives revolve around Iraq, you try to guilt everyone who doesn't agree with your outlook on life. Some of us tend to focus on the smaller things. I'm glad that you are perfectly unhappy worrying about the state of world affairs, but forgive me if I'm not on that chapter yet. I'd much prefer to figure out my own life before I fix the rest of the damned world.

The Structure of olyblog perpetuates attacks:Oly-Atttack-Central

My observation may be wrong.

But I believe the Entire Structure of olyblog greatly perpetuates attacks against people.  Its not the individual docents personality, its the "personality" of the way olyblog is structured, so i hope thats not taken too rudely.  One of the numerous reasons facebook and myspace have become so popular is because they allow people to control who is going to comment on your blog entries, thus they allow bloggers to write entries without being attacked.  How can anyone say this is a "community" blog when no community would ever let the same people attack other people repeatedly?

Most folks who read comments here know exactly who the meanest, most frequent posting people are here.  And we know which docents support them or even worse, label the attack a 'stimulating debate' and then turn a blind eye while their friends attack people.  So why can't we have the ability to block the comments of those particular people and the blog administration who let their friends attack people?  There is one main answer: It is not at all an accident that the entire structure of olyblog perpetuates attacks.

Same thing with the calendar here.  Protest.net and Craiglist have by far some of the world'd most famous online calendars, and I don't think that would ever be the case if people had to worry about comments and attacks actually attached to each and every event that they list.  You try to list a nice event here and what happens?  People place mean comments on it.  So when other people go read your event, they also have to read all the mean comments too.  And you wonder why more people won't post events here?  At Oly-Attack-Central?

But here, much like several people have already said, the same old folks and some of them administration attack you repeatedly and they make comments like olyblog "is really working" and is really helping people.  Yes, its "working" for people who love to attack others.  I've seen people post some quality writing here and before I can even digest what I've read the same people pounce all over them.  Ever watch a National Geographic video of piranhas in a frenzy devouring something in the water?  And you know even if you were there you'd be helpless to do anything because you'd get eaten alive too?  Thats what its like watching someone place an article or event onto olyblog with the regular attack-squad swoop in to devour someone, and the administration here throws in extra meat into the pool every now and then like 'what an interesting conversation' while an attack is taking place in front of them.  Are we really expected to go to them to ask for it tobe deleted?

For those folks this is the place to be.  The only reason I post this is because:

*For the first time I have noticed a lot of people speak out against these attacks
*I have come to realize that there is a still a large percentage of people who are also tired of being attacked and maybe there are one or two docents who might change things, because I have noticed there are still one or two docents who don't attack people.

WHo knows,

maybe docents may stop people from attacking their mean comments to the events and articles of others.

Who knows.  Maybe this will be seen as an attack even though its directed at no single person and I posted it to an open thread.  I'd honestly just like to see some changes so that the attacks stop.  Its my thought that an end to such attacks would be good.

But,
My Observation May be wrong

Welcome to Olyblog

And thank you for sharing your observations. You wouldn't happen to have any chanterelle recipes would you?
»

naw

I don't think anyone will see it as an attack. Olyblog is whatever it's users decide it will be. News media, open forum, social gathering, protest antenna, or a little of all that and more. Thanks for voicing your observations, and welcome to the club.
»

Welcome

Your observations aren't wrong, you have the right to your opinions certainly. I don't agree with everything you have written and that is okay too.

First, regarding posting events, if anyone wants to post an event and not have it open to comments, let a docent know, we can set comments to "read only". I know this is not the same as each member being able to do this themselves, but it is an option and possible solution.

Some people who are active here also have their own blogs elsewhere. That way they can make more choices as to how they want their blog to look and function. OlyBlog of course cannot be everything to everyone. It is not a myspace, livejournal, or friendster type of site, we aren't structured for that.

I myself don't see us as "Oly-Attack-Central". I do have my own frustrations about what I see as some members choosing to do a lot of bashing of their fellow community members. But I also see a lot of OlyBlog that is innnovative and inspiring, for instance enpen's street art project and Emmett's city council reflections.

If you were a docent here, how would you handle what you see as attacks?

And we know which docents support them or even worse, label the attack a 'stimulating debate' and then turn a blind eye while their friends attack people.

I can't think of an example of this that I've seen. I've seen we docents involved in some intense discussions but I've not seen an outright attack. I know not all members will like all docents. I'm concerned that sometimes scapegoating occurs of an individual docent or other. I'd like to see folks directly address their concerns directly to whatever docent they feel is involved.

I might be misunderstanding a lot of what you have said here, that is always a possibility.

Good suggestions all

I have enought to try a couple suggestions. I'll report back to you.
