It seems that the author of the announcement of the BINN event deleted the post last night. This was possible because of an oversight on my part (allowing users to delete events). It is disappointing because it interrupted a lively debate that was occurring.

»

Can it be retrieved?

I wish there were some way to retrieve that discussion -- not only because it was a lively debate which generated a lot of interest, but also because it provided an important record in which very serious accusations were made and countered. It also provided samples of some problematic writing which may be submitted to Works In Progress as "articles," and for which WIP will then be accused of censoring people of color if not printed. If possible, I would like to see it retrieved as an archive, if not a continuing "live" discussion.

Don't know if there is an Olyblog policy around this.

Thanks

EG, thanks for finding that for us, folks.....have at it.
»

Yes, thank you

Thank you for this EG. However, when I click on the link, I'm only able to access the first page of dialogue. I believe there were at least 3 pages. Is there a way to access the rest?
»

Was there more?

Janet posted the last comment as far as I remember but it could be a cache thing.  Google may not have indexed Olyblog on the 25th leaving some comments out.  Janet would know for sure but I do think she was the last post.  If you don't see comments that you know you made, search for a few words of your most recent post.

Docents generally move to a second page after 90 or so comments and I don't recall this particular BINN thread being that long.

Here's the google search I used:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=olyblog+%22sandy+m%22+BINN

In the search box I have - olyblog "Sandy M" BINN

»

It was 1 page for me

but I also have the blog set to give me 100 posts per page. It may be set differently for Sandy.
»

Yes, there was more

There were at least two more very long comments from "Karla." But thanks, EG, for posting what you did.
»

Yeah,

Karla's "articles" are gone.
»

Karla seemed confused about how WIP works

She posted some "articles," the authorship of which was unclear, challenging WIP to publish them in our November issue, saying I had "promised" to print everything submitted. I clarified that WIP's entire editorial team makes decisions about what to publish, not me, and I wouldn't have made such a promise. Nevertheless, I would like everyone to know that WIP is very eager to publish articles and announcements about marginalized issues, events, and people, and we invite you to submit stories and announcements to submissions@olywip.org.

There were a lot of long posts, but my daughter was sick yesterday, AND I have a new client, so I was busy and couldn't read everything. Maybe someone else can recap. Thanks!

»

Personally, I don't see much

Personally, I don't see much value in trying to recap. There is really no way to re-create that discussion. I'm guessing that those who were engaged with it or looking on will have come away with strong lasting impressions. For others, any attempt to summarize will only be hearsay.

As for Works In Progress: Yes, the paper's mission is to provide a local forum for information and analysis about issues which are under-represented or mis-represented in the mainstream media. Toward that end, we very much depend on the readership -- members of the community -- to submit articles on topics they care about.

As well, Works In Progress is a highly finite and underfunded resource. Page inches in a print publication come at a high premium. As stewards of this limited resource, members of the WIP collective have to make difficult decisions each month about what gets printed and what does not -- or what gets edited and by how much.

Which is why we emphasize the importance of keeping article submissions as focused and concise as possible. And of course we also expect certain basic standards of evidence to support positions or statements made in an article. We do not print libelous, rambling ad hominem attacks -- which is how I would characterize Karla's posts on the discussion in question.

Anyway, thanks to all who tried to retrieve the discussion. This is a lesson to me that when I see something I think needs to be preserved for the record, I will copy and save as a doc.

There was much more

The last entry I am able to view is from Janet:

"Bring 'em on!

Submitted by Janet B on Wed, 10/24/2007 - 4:25pm.

Maybe it will keep them out of worse trouble."

Is that true for everyone else?

Again, I am very grateful to EG for posting what he was able to retrieve. I'm just frustrated that the record of the remaining discussion, which went well beyond that point, may be lost.

Oh well.

Some of Karla's comments are

Some of Karla's comments are still visible.  Any missing comments were probably lost between Janet's last post (10/24/2007 @ 4:25pm) and Google's indexing engine not picking up Olyblog before the post was removed.

Advice for an annoying cough

Some co-workers were kind enough to share their flu with me. Fortunately it wasn't as severe as a nasty one which knocked me down for the count last year but I still ended up staying home Wednesday.

Last night I was awake coughing. It was that annoying type where a phlegmy irritation is right at the front of the throat, when you cough it seems to be expelled, but then it reforms within seconds. It disturbs the household and possibly the neighbor on the other side of the apartment wall.

When we moved in three weeks ago we threw a lot of junk away, which included most of what was in our cupboards. So while I ended up buying a bottle of Ibu Wednesday morning it was now 2:00 am Friday, needing to be up for work in four hours, and there was no Ludens, Halls, Sucrets, Nice, Nyquil or Jim Beam in the house. No hard candies either. I didn't feel like throwing some clothes on and puttering to Safeway.

But there was something I could try, and I'll be damned but it worked almost instantaneously and for the rest of the night.

I had most of a bag of Ginger Chews available. Instead of eating it I decided to try it like a lozenge. Handling the product slower than normal meant my throat suddenly burned more than was usual but it wasn't even halfway dissolved before I no longer felt the need to cough anything out. I still have the occasional half-cough every twenty minutes or so but nothing matching the annoyance of last night.

I probably wouldn't have had the same results if my chest was congested or my tonsils were swollen. I also suspect something with not enough bite, such as Ginger Altoids, wouldn't have been good enough either.

Catholic baiting is the anti-Semitism of the liberals.

That annoying cough

Exactly what I had. Hopefully I'm finally over it, glad the ginger worked for you. Drinking lots and lots of liquids did the trick for me.

Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ

I saw the silent movie It last night at The Wa. Center for the Performing Arts and before the movie rolled we were treated to a Gershwin medley played by Dennis James on their amazing organ. The organist's back is to us for those silent films, what with the curve of the organ and the player's position (add in my drowsiness), and I felt like I was on a great ship soaring through the night sky of Olympia. Organist at the prow, our captain.

It is very worth seeing, Timberland has copies. This is where the whole "It girl" thing started.

I was wondering why they

I was wondering why they made a silent adaptation of Stephen King.

But then again, It was one of my least favorite King movies so maybe turning the volume down would be beneficial.

I've never seen a Mae West movie, it's about time I remedied that.

Why Karla deleted his post

Most likely the reason "Karla" deleted his post is because he decided to put it on his website and therefore control the message:

http://www.dsame.com/binn2007/WhyWeNeedMediaThatSupportsRadicalActivists.pdf

It is especially important for "Karla" to control his message because he wants us to believe that he is an immigrant Latina woman.

However, as far as I know:

  1. "Karla" is not Latina.
  2. "Karla" is not a woman.
  3. "Karla" is not an immigrant.
  4. "Karla" does not speak Spanish, other than "gracias."
  5. "Karla Mendez" goes by several names, such as "T" and "Dsame," and has another account on OlyBlog, "moreinterestingstuff."
  6. "Karla Mendez" is also the founder of several fake organizations of which he is the sole member, such as Multicultural Outreach Media and the Institute of PAMELA. (Actually, Karla is just the associate director of the Institute of PAMELA. Its other members are James, Jimmy, Joe, and Dr. Mary.)
  7. When "Karla" is not busy creating organizations, he spends his time putting together "progressive" conferences and events, such as "LINK -Design for a Loving Future," "The International Free of Kings" conference, "Bias In Northwest News And Media Conference", "A World Beyond Capitalism" conference, etc.
  8. When "Karla" gets tired of dissing WIP, he will publicly denounce OlyBlog with the same accusations, just as he previously did with Riseup.net and no doubt countless others.

"Karla" has assumed this particular identity in order to claim to speak for marginalized peoples.

I am neither Latina nor female, nor do I claim to be. However, I am a person of color and an immigrant, and "Karla" definitely does not speak on my behalf.

I am concerned with issues of racism and oppression, institutionalized and otherwise. If "Karla" was just as concerned about these issues, then he would know that it is extremely offensive to assume identities which are not his own and then cry "oppression."

Finally, Karla has criticized others for revealing that Karla is not his real name. His reason is as follows: "The most important aspect to an activist writer is privacy, privacy, privacy." I consider myself an activist, and I occasionally write. Yet I never use a pseudonym. Even if I were so concerned about privacy that I resorted to a pseudonym, I would still not pretend to be a blind, trans, Native, immigrant Muslim and then complain about being oppressed as such.

The world is full of people suffering from enough real oppression without having someone advocate on their behalf by co-opting their identities and pretending to cry their pain. I think the best "Karla" can do to help the oppression and marginalization of others is to do some introspection.

Oh now, that was rich! The ding-dong decided to change our names to protect our privacy (You know how my life's been in danger from the moment I first opened my mouth on Olyblog...actually...nevermind)

Along with "Jethro B" and "Rob Roy" I've found that I've been christened "Melly". Of course, when the cursor is held over our name links we're identified, so much for our protection.

And I noticed Karla T. went ahead and outted the G-Man. Bummer.

"Jethro"!?!

Like the son on the Beverly Hillbillies? And who gave him the right to re-assign my gender? Pretty funny. And again, I have to marvel at his level of commitment, and all that free time.

At least you got a name

I was turned into "Not"

"Not"? Strange...

I've seen some weird things go on on Olyblog, but never has someone deleted an entire thread then posted an edited version on his own site. Is this the new face of non-oppressive citizen journalism?

Lock out opposing viewpoints.

Don't play by their rules they take their ball and go home. Pretty sad.

My new name is better than your new name.

"Politicians Friend".  And I even got my own disclaimer!  I'm famous!  Shit, I'm goin' to Disneyland!

Thank you, Phan.

And, yes, I saved a copy of that PDF of Karla/T/etc's altered version of the Olyblog discussion.
