There are several long threads on the blog. Here's a blank slate for you to scribble on.

Love the deed, not the doer.

I think the MT myth is a lot hype. I think she played poor to garner sympathy, and maybe she did some good, but she wasn't unselfish.

Gandhi was an Oxford grad who only chose non-violence because he knew it would work strategically and the decisions he made got a lot of people killed who probably weren't fully aware of what they were getting themselves into.

MLK JR. was a repeat adulterer.

My point is that hero worship is a waste, and is usually blind. There is a saying that goes, "hate the sin, not the sinner", well I believe the opposite to be true.

»

I love it, Rob!

Much to the contrary belief by certain people on The Olympian's comments, I share my community service work with others as an opportunity to let people know that there are organizations that need their help.  I don't need applause, I need a helping hand.

Hear Hear

MT has also been quoted many times for having great doubt in her actions. She did not proclaim herself to be a Saint.

Aside though.. there is nothing wrong with the occasional hero worship.. if it's Steve Jobs..

You mean

Love the virtue, not the virtuous? Personlly I think hate is a emotional cancer that should be cut out at the earliest opportunity. "Sin" should be met with compassion, not hate.
»

All things are mixtures of "good" and "bad"

At least from someone's point of view. Your approach is the only one that makes sense to me.
»

sure,

That's definitely closer to what I was getting at.

My theory is that hate is created by some combination of anger and fear that is allowed to fester with no outlet. Hate is not as common as it seems, nobody really hates the things they say they do. I don't even think racists hate non-whites, no matter how much they say they do. Hate is the physical manifestation of unchecked anger and fear. Hate is not an emotion that can come as easily as happiness or guilt or fear or sadness or even love. Hate is human, though. I'm not sure cancer is the best comparison, but I can't think of one that I feel is appropriate right now. I'll have to get back to you.

Anger a fear are the seeds hate

but they all grow in fields of sorrow. That's where the compassion comes in, I think. Especially for one's self.

How did she "play" poor? Was

How did she "play" poor? Was she actually hiding caviar dinners, breakfast served in her bed of silk sheets, was she hiding jewelry under her robes? Were Phil and Meta playing poor these last few years?

Absolutely...

You should've seen the sexy wagon I got to drive when I was at B&R.  You would've thought, "How did that cat get such a hot car, and how can he possibly claim poverty while driving that thing!"

Shaggin' Wagon baby! Yeah!

You were the epitome of cool Phil. ANY babe in Oly would have gone for a ride in that rustic beast of yours!

That was the ugliest car ever!

Know that it now resides with a group of hicks who want to pull things with it.

Well, I'm glad the shaggin'

Well, I'm glad the shaggin' wagon found a loving home. Hopefully the hicks don't realize it's awesome lovin' powers and decide to procreate in it.
»

HICKS?

WHAT? "HICKS"? ARE YOU FAKE OR SOMETHING???
»

Yes, in a way

The difference between MT and Phil and Meta, and myself for that matter, is that we don't have 10's of millions (MT quite possibly had over $100 million) of dollars at our disposal. I'm not saying that there is something wrong with her choosing a life of poverty, but I believe she used her lifestyle choice. I don't run around everywhere crying that I only make $200 a month, or dressing myself so that I look as poor as I can. I'm not saying MT bitched about being poor, but I think she definitely used that imagine to her advantage, especially with political or spiritual or economic leaders.
»

Bear in mind, she would have

Bear in mind, she would have been despised if she dressed her apparent wealth while still living with the poor of Calcutta. 100 Million would do a lot, but unfortunately it wouldn't be enough to eliminate poverty in India.

Not really my point.

I just want to agree to disagree on this and move on.

I call bullshit.  What's B&R's budget?... like a 100 thousand a year?  Maybe 120 or more?  That's a handy chunk of change.  It may not be millions, but neither are you trying to serve millions of people.  Blessed Theresa had less resources per need than you've got.

Beware of folks like Hitchens, Rob.  Dude's got a chip on his shoulder, and his criticisms of Mother Theresa are a cheap attempt at denying that Catholicism is good for anything at all.  His rhetoric is really kind of disgusting.

Hindsight..

That account is measly to manage and ridiculous to continually apply for. You should be ashamed for saying it's a handy chunk of change. You know better. Don't make that comparison again.

come on

Phil, I love you, but don't treat me like an idiot. I have my views, and you have yours. It's possible that one of us is wrong or both of us is wrong or maybe even both of us are right. Or maybe it doesn't matter, I like that idea better.

Beware of folks like Mounier, Phil. Dude's got a chip on his shoulder, and his criticisms of the individual are a cheap attempt at denying that a person is good for anything at all. His rhetoric is really kind of elitist.

There used to be a restaurant in Shelton called the Copper Top. Their top burger was described as this huge too-big-for-a-grizzly type monster, but they had a Junior version which was half the size.

So, being cautious, I got the junior. They brought me this full-sized dinner plate with bun and meat of the same size and all the fixin's. They confirmed that this was the Junior. I couldn't finish it, and since I despise wasting food I'm glad I hadn't gotten the bigger one.

The Barge Burger

When John Stedham owned Steamboat Annie's I worked there on Sunday's for a few years to make some extra money.  I was pimping out a blue '81 CiviC at the time.  Priorities...

We made the patties in-house and the buns were ordered from Wagner's.  What a mess!  The patty was made from 8 regular hamburger patties.  Mooo.

He later bought what is now Tugboat Annie's and served it there as well.  It's still there, although, I don't think John is part of Tugboat Annie's any longer.

Did You Ever Seriously Wonder...

why you need a license to have a pet but not one to have a child?  Or why we have to take lessons to drive a car, fly an airplane, etc. but none to raise a child?  Raising a child is be far harder than learning to drive or fly!

Raising kids right is

Raising kids right is practically impossible. When you do everything right the child has other ideas, and just when it's all been figured out the latest crop of experts change the rules.

If we had licenses, we'd have a father who settles disputes with his belt, cusses the mother in front of the kids, lets his boy sip from the beer can, won't let his daughter date a [insert slur], and he'll proudly display his certification that he received in 1953.

Parent License

1) Women often suffer accidental pregnancies, and they would also deliberately get pregnant without a license. What do you do then, force abortions or wait for the birth and put the baby into foster care? Both options are horrible. Larry Niven wrote about a future society with parenthood licenses. A cop said "the worst part of my job is the mother hunts." 2) Birth rates have dropped to the point where we risk a top-heavy society. That's one in which there are too few working people paying for the pensions and benefits for too many retirees. Our society already discourages parenthood, and if we make laws that make it even harder, we could see negative population growth, as they do in Russia and Japan. --Scott

Well, in my way of thinking...

the idea of raising children wouldn't be so bad if we could train them to do tricks and then loan them out to sideshows every now and again. It would be a fun and entertaining experience for them and they'd see the world. Then later, when they were seven or eight, they would come home with wisdom and a new outlook on life.

Yep

Needs to be removed from the gene-pool. Does anyone even want to TRY and rehab the guy? If they do, what are the chances that he will reoffend? Does anyone want to take that chance? Not with my kid(s).

This Man

who was arrested claims he found the videotape laying out in the desert somewhere and took it home & viewed it with a couple of buddies to see what was on it.  Yeah, right.

I've seen pictures of this little girl asking for her identity for about a week now and every time I do I cringe wondering who this child's mother is and why she hasn't come forward.

Things don't add up

The local story of the moment grabbing national headlines is about a Maple Valley woman trapped in her car after running down a steep ravine.

Woman found alive 8 days later

Searchers found her thanks to a cell phone signal.  Whose cell phone lasts 8 days?  Was she charging it through the 12v adapter?  What about water?  Something tells me she wasn't there for 8 days.

Tom Rider, Tanya's husband, is being openly critical of search efforts.  That's understandable, but what I don't get is the public nature in which he's doing it.  I wouldn't be talking to anyone - I'd be by my wife's side just looking at her if that were me.

I'm also a bit put off by Rider's claim that he asked police to search the specific area in which Tanya was found and even drove it 4-5 times himself.  4-5 times seems hardly enough.  It reminds me of a line from Billy Madison starring Adam Sandler.  Madison, recounting the story read to him by his teacher, lambastes:

"Billy: Whoa whoa whoa, Miss Lippy. The part of the story I don't like is that the little boy gave up looking for Happy after an hour. He didn't put posters up or anything, he just sat on the porch like a goon and waited. That little boy's gotta think: "You got a pet. You got a responsibility." If your dog is lost you don't look for an hour then call it quits. You get your ass out there and you find that fucking dog."

I found this story odd as well.  My husband and I were just trying to figure out how someone wouldn't report a spouse missing until 3 or 4 days later.

I would just lock him up

to keep him from harming anyone else. That would effectively remove him from the gene pool. His chances of reoffending could be from 10% to 50% depending on his mental health, family history, etc. There is a growing body of research providing evidence that certain treatments can significantly reduce the likelihood of reoffending.

Regardless, this population subjects the metal of those who profess to "hate the sin but love the sinner" to a rather harsh test.

"hate the sin but love the sinner" Luckily I'm not a strong enough Catholic to believe that idea. I don't think society should have to feed the guy personally.
