I wonder if this kind of weather is going to be more frequent in the PNW with the changes in climate that are occurring.

Can someone tell me why

Can you tell me why when I didn't allow the street urchin to use my cell phone to "call his lost girlfriend - you know its important" the tax I paid was punctured tires on my bike? Sorry for getting off topic on this "open thread" but I am infuriated and this blog seems to be tapped into the vein of Oly speaking to this element in Oly.

agitated peoples

I was out downtown tonight, and perhaps this deserves its own thread, but I noticed a couple of things. There were a lot of drunk people (this was before 9pm) and there were a lot of agitated people, lots of rowdy yelling, cursing, etc. One man was driving around swearing and spouting vulgarities at pedestrians from a blue hatchback.

There was also an oder of sewage at certain spots. It was only in specific spots, but it was a strong odor. I wonder if something is wrong.

So I can understand that there was an atmosphere downtown tonight where someone's tires might have been punctured by an ill-behaved "street" person.

An odor of sewage?

That will ruin Arts Walk!

Accosted and Assaulted in the Streat

Yesterday, while riding downtown from the Eastside, I was accosted and assaulted by a young man who appeared to be suffering from a case of severe and extreme emotional upset, and a possible drug overdose. I was about a block away when I saw him strut into State Ave in front of a yellow minitruck. He was carrying a bottle of water. The truck stopped without hitting him, he banged on the hood, then moved out of the way. But now he was on a collision course with me, and I didn't have a hood on my bike to keep him away. So I stopped before slamming into him, and we were face to face. He grabbed by handle bars and asked me if I wanted to fight him, or get beat up, something to that effect. I responded forcefully no. He seemed like he wanted to spit in my face, but wasn't able to, and drool came out of his mouth. He moved to the side of me and mentioned something about "The scariest day ever," and about eye contact, which I was making with him, though I broke when he moved out of the way from in front of me. I started moving and he attempted to chase me down, but he was wearing jeans and was in no condition to outrun a bicyclist going downhill...

Sorry that happened to you

Sorry that happened to you Rob. Unfortunately it's incidents like that which has people declaring that downtown's a dangerous place, even though we know better.

pacifists make easy targets

Maybe you should wear a Rambo shirt while in public, seems like you're a magnet for goons.

It is too bad that happened, for a number of reasons. Stuff like that happens to me a lot in my line of work, please know that the person, whether they knew me or not, actually resorted to violence in the end. Behavior like that is usually a venting of pent up frustration, perhaps over addiction, or mental illness or both. Mental illness is never a straight line, it's a roller coaster, meaning sometimes a person will be normal-ish, and other times a person will be bat-shit crazy, and all the points in between. Sometimes, perhaps in the case of the person you "ran into", they are at a point where they know what's happening but are also struggling against voices that can be very demanding.

One thing that helps me tremendously in my work is not writing off other people's version of reality. Recently, at BRAC, we made friends with a guy by every day making him a packet of magic vitamins that kept the vampires away. The vampires are out to get him, and these vitamins help. He didn't trust us at all, for a long time, until one of our staff thought of this. Now he's working with an advocate, getting mental health treatment including meds, and is in a stable place. All because we decided to validate his experience.
