OK, so there has been some really strong talk on OlyBlog about "lifestyle" and wealth, so I'd like to make a challenge to those that think their largess justifies their lifestyle:

If you are "rich", then don't drive your automobile for just one week (7 days).

Walk to where you have to go or bicycle. Seriously, if you can, then that is great, but if you try and fail, then maybe try cutting the "rest of us" who don't buy into the entitlement mentality some slack (...is that fair enough?)...the point is that many of us make a choice not to pollute & consume, we are smart enough to realize the benefit for ourselves and want to impact the Earth as little as possible...all these things (and more!), whether or not we are "poor" or "rich"-

-in fact, to me, it seems a bigger committment when someone without alot of cash or resources makes the effort compared to when a "rich" person does, but I digress.

Just try it, OK?

It is pretty easy to drive a car (I can), but walking & biking is harder than pushing the gas pedal, so I challenge "you" to try to "fit in my shoes"?

Ask yourself:

Can you bike to work & walk to the store? (I can and do).

Can you even get to work under you own power?

Without debating, just do it (try at least).

We are all folks just trying to get by & on with Life, so I'd be very curious to hear if anyone can succeed with this challenge who does not already do these things (walking + biking), and I'm also really interested in anyone has a problem with this challenge~

Wish I could

abt 60 miles per day roundtrip.  I rode my bike home one day, it was pretty hot and I was cooked before I made it to Bucoda.  Was a great ride though.

I drive cheap, old cars that I keep rebuilding.  I have an idea that I somehow lower my impact by not engaging in all the economic activity that would accompany a new car with a car payment, full insurance, etc.  Spent a few hours in the garage today.  Looks like my new, old car is going to need front end rebuild.  I enjoy the mechanical work as a break from all the writing and thinking that I do for cash, but there are days when I think a new car looks pretty comfortable.

I am waiting for some kind of breakthrough, maybe an electric conversion or something.

I'm far from rich

A mediocre state position and a non-profit do not make for wealth.

We do manage our funds pretty well.

Living 15 miles from work with not a reasonable "backroad" makes for bad bicycling, as do older bodies that don't tolerate that kind of activity.

I just parked the Expedition and it will be used only for towing.  We now get around on two cheap to drive cars that are 11 and 13 years old, respectively.

The best the old folks can do.
