Back in the 1930s the Olympia telephone book included numbers for Shelton, Hoodsport, Union, and a place called Pixley. I cannot find any other reference for such a settlement. Anyone out there in OlyBlogland know where this is/was?

San Fran on the canal?

From Hood Canal (the book):

Frank Pixley, the nephew of San Francisco politician and newspaper publisher, brought California gold rush money up the coast into Hood Canal with the notion of building a new San Francisco founded on art and wealth.

"Pix" as Pixley became known, purchased much of John McReavy's Union City plat. Eventually his holdings extended from Dewatto to Tahuya and from Union City to Alderbrook. He named his empire Yachthaven, and in 1916, he shipped his wife, two children, a printing press, a piano, and all of the books he could stuff aboard home to Hood Canal...

Yachthaven isn't Pixley, but wouldn't be the first time the locals gave something a different name.

Postmarked Washington

If the place ever had a post office you should be able to find the opening and closing dates at least in this: Ramsey, Guy Reed. Postmarked Washington : Thurston County. Thurston County Historical Commission, 1988.
