Big protest down there, read about it here.

Term limits

The concept sounds great on the surface, but in my opinion, is a slap in the face of a true democratic rule.  If the people want a leader indefinitely and legal elections are held, I don't see the problem.

Dictators suck.

Even the Socialist flavored ones. Larry does have a point though, if the elections are valid and legal, and the people vote out term limits, then so be it.

Maybe it's the socialist in me

but what if 51% of the population were doing real well, and the other 49% were suffering? What if %51 were hardcore Christians, and our constitution was changed...could you imagine "perma-bush"?

I don't think a nation

I don't think a nation divided in half will last very long as a nation. I personally feel that term limits should be a year long for most elected offices, with all elections being publicly funded to give "regular" people a chance to run.

One year?

That would put way too much power into the hands of professional staff. The eunichs would be running the empire.

and?

It would be no different than what we have in Olympia now. Who really runs the city, part-time employee Mark Foutch or full-time employee Steve Hall?

I get what you're saying but I think there is a way around it. First and foremost I would decentralize power by putting more into the hands of neighborhood councils. Services (water, sewer, garbage, transportation, etc) would need to be centralized, but I'd split the city budgets between the N.A.'s and let them build their neighborhood however the people living in them want. Each N.A. would have a chair, all of the chairs would meet monthly with the Mayor. The Mayor would be accountable to them, not the other way around. The idea being to keep the power as close to the bottom as possible.

That's exactly why

"true democratic rule" is particularly unattractive. Nothing "socialist" about your opinion at all.

Quote of the week.

"true democratic rule" is particularly unattractive. Offered up by Guglielmo

One of the great non sequiturs of the left is that, if the free market doesn't work perfectly, then it doesn't work at all-- and the government should step in.

I suppose you're supporting Chavez, then?

I've come to terms with my inner socialist

and I agree, on both points. I actually think I owe Rick a beer the next time I run into him. If he ever comes around again :)

I trust human instinct

I don't think you'll really find that an extremist political position will last indefinitely because the eventuality of such a position is that power becomes abused and popularity changes.

Bush had a great support right after WTC 9/11 and is less than 30% supported 6 years later.  His performance drove his popularity down.

I stress that the key to popular democracy is legal and fair elections
