VOTE YES PROP. 1

“SAFE KIDS, SAFE COMMUNITIES”

WHAT? On November 6th, 2007 voters will be asked to approve a three-tenths-of-one per cent increase in local sales tax to fund criminal justice and EARLY PREVENTION & INTERVENTION programs.

WHY? Because we can’t keep spending increased amounts of tax money (75% in 2007) on criminal justice. It costs $73 per day to be in jail. Costs rise every year. Jail incarceration rates have increased 300% in the last twenty years. It is time to break the cycle and reduce the numbers going into the criminal justice system.

WHO? A 2005 survey shows that 40% of Thurston County children are not ready for kindergarten. 934 children were placed under DSHS protection from abuse and neglect in 2006. School registrations documented 654 homeless students. 800 youth dropped out of high school in 2006. One in ten youth aged 16-19 were neither in school nor employed. The Jail Population: 60% were abused or neglected as children. 68% did not complete high school. The documented factors contributing to criminal behavior: - low educational levels - high drop-out rates - histories of alcohol & substance abuse - mental illness - child abuse and neglect - criminal behavior among family members.

HOW? The three pennies per $10 will raise about $10 million per year. One third of that will go directly into funding the local public safety & law enforcement. Two thirds, about $6 million will be use for Early Prevention & Intervention programs: 1) Improving School Readiness. 2) Strengthening families to prevent abuse and neglect. 3) Preventing juvenile delinquency and reducing repeat offenses. 4) Promote public safety and reduce adult recidivism.

Got my vote

I'd like to see more money put into school music programs as well.

I am all for it

as long as they spend most of the money on programs that are proven to work...and there are many. Not DARE!!
»

awww

I loved DARE. My dare officer and I still bump into each other from time to time...of course now he's a sheriff but....
»

I will not discount your personal experience with your officer

but scientific studies of the DARE program show that it actualy makes kids more likely to use drugs.
»

Naw

don't worry about it. I like the guy but I think the program was fairly useless

It seems the owner of

It seems the owner of www.dougmah.com, believes Doug supports higher taxes by supporting Prop 1.  What do think about that, Larry?

I'm not sure I see

the political satire anymore.

Agreed.  Up until

Agreed.  Up until yesterday, it pointed to Thurston County Democrats.  Whoever is doing this must really dislike Doug.  I remember a while back when folks were dogging Doug for out of city (and state) contributions.  I checked Meta's PDC today and over $1,000 from Ellensburg has hit her coffers.  Most of it from family.  She's also received money from Walt Jorgensen (former Tumwater City Council).  Anybody here recall his involvement in Booth's campaign against Doug last election?  I seem to recall some PDC efforts.  I'm sure I won't get much information but if someone with some honesty wants to PM me, go for it.

Doug Mah = Gentrification

The answers you seek are all on the PDC website.

I hope people understand the difference between Hogan taking money from her parents in Ellensburg, and Mah taking money from out of town developers. Ma and Pa Hogan don't want to gentrify Olympia.

Some may say in response to this that Doug would never let campaign contributions sway his vote, and I won't argue that, it's probably true, and it simply doesn't matter. These developers want Mah in office badly enough to throw money at him. He doesn't have to do them favors or treat them favorably, his voting M.O. is all they need to move into Olympia and price poor people out of the market. I don't want to live in a place where the only semblance of culture and diversity is bussed in daily to work at service jobs for the haves. I don't want to live in an antiseptic, corporate, advertising ridden metropolis that has no soul, and I will fight every step of the way against people like Mah whose worldviews are so myopic that they don't realize what they are doing is inherently classist. You can throw words like progress around all you want, but when progress comes, for some, at the barrel of a gun, we have to ask ourselves: "Is it worth it?", and, better yet: "How much are we willing to take?"

World views?  We are

World views?  We are talking about a small city mayoral election, right?  This is quite dramatic, Rob.

»

really?

By worldview, I'm not talking international politics, I'm talking about our relationship with the world and everyone in it. If you see the world as a resource to be consumed, you will most likely treat other humans with similar disregard. If you believe the point of living is to "come out on top", then you probably don't care about people "below you". And if you believe that development in the form of $1100 apartments = progress then you probably don't care about houseless people or whether they find a place to live.

I'm almost offended that you would say I'm being dramatic. Our country is going to shit, and it's because people aren't dramatic enough. It's not "cool" to care about issues, it's not "hot" to voice your opinion, and if you rail against a classist individual like Doug Mah, you're being dramatic. I want you to understand that this little rant is one of those, "when you say _____, it makes me feel _____" rants. I know that you probably weren't trying to piss me, but you did, so I have to express that.

Please don't take this on a personal level, but if your only criticism of what I have to say is to call it dramatic, then I don't care to hear it. I'm not just spouting off here, I truly mean everything I say. I'm being dramatic because somebody needs to be.

And if you believe that

And if you believe that development in the form of $1100 apartments = progress then you probably don't care about houseless people or whether they find a place to live.

Uh, that means they don't care about people who are doing ok and getting by but would not pay $1100 for an apartment and really couldn't afford it. It blows my mind that people rent an apt for that much.

»

They say that what you pay

They say that what you pay for rent or mortgage should be no more than a third of your pay. That means Tammy and I have to find a place to live on $800 a month or less (preferably less) which leaves hardly any options here (but a few in University Place)

No, cramping together in a Studio isn't a valid option. Neither is sharing a community home.

It's a fair call, but Society's to blame. ~ Right! We'll be charging them too!

This is a non-partisan issue.

Fair question, EG, but my real answer is that I don't see this to be a partisan issue.

I'm guessing that Doug Mah sees the financial value in the Proposition as do many other people.  I attended the fundraiser kick off to this event and both GOP and Dems were represented.

There are some people that live in the "no new taxes" world and I suggest that they are not realistic to think that the costs of goods and services can increase, but governments should continue to operate on the same budget year in and year out.  It's a very "paradigmish" viewpoint to the solution of the problem.

I don't support the hijacking of the domain name and would prefer to see this type of activity stop, but I definitely don't want to see any of that controversy end up as part of the fodder for discussion of Proposition 1.
