Olympia, WA. On March 22, 2008, the City of Olympia will host a public meeting to discuss a proposal to rezone several parcels on the isthmus between Capitol Lake and Budd Inlet. The meeting will be held from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Olympia Center, 222 Columbia Street NW, Olympia Washington.

The current zone, Urban Waterfront, allows either residential or commercial uses to be developed. The proposed zone, Urban-Waterfront-Housing limits development above the first floor to residential uses. Increasing housing in the downtown area is an important Council goal so that more people will have opportunity to live, work, learn, shop and play in downtown Olympia. Another component of the proposal is to modify the maximum allowable building height from 35 feet to between 65 and 90 feet.

This is an opportunity to learn more about the proposal and participate in a public conversation about the future of downtown Olympia.

Thanks for this announcement

I hope that this public comment hearing is well attended so that citizens who are concerned about this building proposal are able to make their concerns to be heard loud and clear.

Triway link

...anybody got a lead on the Triway website?

Update: this may be the correct site Triway

Info from Vo's site:

Triway Enterprises supports the Vietnamese Language School, where Tri Vo was once the principal, South Puget Sound Community College Scholarship Program, Girls and Boys Club of Thurston County, Olympia YWCA, American Legion Tumwater Post 166-WA, Olympia Symphony Orchestra, and Lacey Tunes Concert in the Park Series.

Triway is well connected to the City Council

through Jeanette Hawkins who "helped create the low-impact subdivision regulations" for the Cooper Crest development that is now plagued by problems. I honestly can't say i trust Triway or the city council to act in the best interest of Olympia's citizens. source: http://www.citizenreviewonline.org/march2007/26/low_impact.html

sheet mulch

fair enough and thanks for the URL...

...on another note, I'd suggest sheet mulching to help with soil problems =)

Urgh...

I have a horrible feeling this will come to pass, and is a foregone conclusion...

Building massively expensive condos downtown, will most likely mean importing people who can afford them from out of the area.  People who only want a nice view in a charming "small town" and don't realize they are destroying the charm of that small town.

I'm not happy with this at all.  People with no vested interest in the community will not make an effort to keep their dollars local, and will impose their values on the rest of us, without trying to blend with Oly.

Consider what happens when certain breeds of Californians move places... they ruin it.  Instead of embracing the culture and way of life where they move (because they liked the culture and way of life) they wind up trying to thrust their own values on the area and ruining it.

No good will come of this.  Once you allow one of these monsters, others will come.  The slow death of the comfortable, slightly gritty yet charming and loveable downtown we all love is at hand.  Once everyone gets priced out of downtown, what then?

well

Symbols = powerful things. Our City Council just informed us that we don't need to keep our money local in order to build our new Olympia.

Yup

All that money should be spent local.

I'll bet every single bit of art needed could be made in Oly or Thurston County.

Pandering to big business interests and working on the next political score and advancement.  Ugh.

I want city hall at the Old Safeway.  I just want them to use The Old Safeway they don't deserve any better.  I've got some letters to put out when I feel decent again.

Liability

A large, sculptured artwork can't be built without insurance, sad but true.  This (paying the insurance) is going to be a factor in choosing the artist.
