As the mother of a teenage girl, I am quite concerned about the two sexual assaults that have occurred recently in our neighborhood. (Statistically, females are more likely to be raped during their teen years than any other time in their lives.) It seems to me that the Olympian is moving kind of slowly in reporting on this event, especially since there is now a sketch available of the suspect. The sketch is shown on video on the KIRO-TV news website. <p>

The rape which occurred Wednesday near the St. Martin's University campus is not that far from the sexual assault which occurred on March 17 at Indian Springs Country Club (Olympian story here). I haven't heard anyone mention that the crimes may be connected, but I'm sure the thought has occurred to other nervous people who live near these two locales.

I emailed the Lacey PD, requesting the police sketch of the suspect to post to Olyblog, but haven't had a response from them yet. I can't believe that although this sketch is available, the Olympian hasn't posted it yet.

I have a friend in Lacey

Who called me wanting advice on a gun and self defense... I hooked her up with my Kimber Guardian Angel pepper spray device...

I posted something on situational awareness and avoiding attacks when possible here a while back. I included a link to the full story which mainly concerns itself with ways to avoid attack.

Contrary to common myths, a woman armed with a defensive tool of her choice that she knows how to use is not likely to have that tool turned against them. The great self defense expert Massad Ayoob has written some articles on threat assessment, responding to rape, and being armed and female. Which is also a book of the same title by the equally great Ms. Paxton Quigley

Hope this helps. BTW for those who may be willing to resort to firearms, please don't get anything smaller than a .380 or a .38 special. Anything smaller is really an expert's gun regardless of sex, although a gun is better than no gun if you know how to use it and are willing to.

The Guardian Angel.  Get 'em at Sportsman's Warehouse for about $40.

Good luck. I raised a teenage daughter and it was a real hair whitening experience. But I survived, and so did she. And so will you.

KIRO-TV is reporting the rapist used a Taser

The Olympian doesn't have anything about the rape near St. Martin's University in today's paper, but KIRO-TV is now reporting that the rapist used a Taser in the attack.  Which leads me to wonder, how does someone obtain a Taser?  Was this someone who worked in law enforcement?  Or are there means by which citizens can obtain Tasers?  Anyone know?
»

Easy to get.

They even make them in nice, fashonable colors like any other accessory.
»

Tasers and their ilk

Are a dime a dozen.  You can get stun guns (which rely on two prongs making contact with skin, they are basically an extension of the hand, you need to get real close to someone to use them) at gas stations everywhere.  A true Taser (which relies on compressed air to launch a barbed projectile you need to be within about 10 feet or so optimally ) is a bit pricey and are generally found in quality gun shops, pawn shops, and of course the internet.

If this is going to turn into an "OMG I can't believe ANYONE can buy XXXX" thread, I'm bowing out.

I had hoped to generate some conversation about situational awareness and what any person can do to lessen the risks of being attacked or mugged.   An aware person is much less likely to get attacked.  An aware person with a defensive tool they know how to use is much more likely to foil an attack.

that guy

I said the same thing to myself when I saw the drawing

I figured out who I recognized

My daughter said the same

My daughter said the same thing... he looked familiar. I hope they catch him soon.

Just asking a question

I didn't realize Tasers were available to the public... we thought maybe it was a clue to the identity of the perp. Guess it could be anyone with internet access!
»

Cattle prods are basically

Cattle prods are basically the same thing and of course they have been legally available for decades.
»

A cattle prod and a taser are different beasts

As a kid being bored and stupid or just messing around I got shocked several times with a cattle prod. The pain was equivalent to getting nailed by the electric fence. It sure didn't drop me to the ground twitching. And the cattle prod didn't make a crackling noise or have arcs leaping from the probe tips.

Stun Guns

Looks like Dr. Kevorkian

Seems that many here discounted S6's suggestion at arming teens with appropriate weapons. I raised 2 girls and 2 boys, and I agree with my grumpy friend, stevenl, its a long road, with some bumps, but in the end, all worth it.

As for the issue of weapons, in this age, I believe we should be helping our teens with their protection. Really, both boys and girls need to be armed, maybe at varying degrees, but armed never the less. My kids were armed, not with tasers, but with the knowledge of knowing how to fight and also pepper spray. I could go on a long rant about how to arm your kids, but it would fall on deaf ears for the most part here, and certainly on J....lw's ears as it's clear he/she[ ;-)]doesn't like me much. But we all need to be responsible for our own safety....and our kids. Prepare for the worst, and hope for the best.

Good on you S6 for providing suggestions, repetitively. Maybe someone out there is listening to you, whether adult or minor.

"many here?"

Many? What, like one or two of us... Holy smokes!!!

Well Gug,

S6 has done several posts about self defense, and either you hear crickets on the thread, or he has to defend his position, I wasn't talking about just this thread.

S6 does a good job providing info on self defense, but I have to wonder if he is wasting his time. Hopefully some of the silent readers are enjoying the benefits of S6's posts.

who's enjoying the benefits of S6's posts.  In fact, as someone who's never owned a gun, never wanted one in her house and never wanted one, I'm actually interested in learning more about them now!

Let;'s play the ball, shall we?

I am concerned about my family's safety, and I don't really see what there is to argue about. We're all on the same side here, right, when the topic is a rapist at large?
»

or

We could teach our kids that violence isn't cool. Then they'd teach their kids that. Then we wouldn't have to bother with those silly devices.

»

Right

You'll notice I made as big an issue out of simple awareness as I did the tools for protection.

Anyway you teach your kids violence isn't cool, and I'll teach mine the same thing but let them know it is okay to use it to protect themselves and see which ones get victimized.

Seriously I'm all for nonviolence.  I'll avoid a violent encounter whenever I can, but if I can't I'll use whatever force I have to in order to protect myself from harm.

I don't think your noble ideals can be instilled in 100% of the human race.  We aren't wired that way.

You need to differentiate between unjust violence and just violence.

Surely you don't subscribe to the "roll over and take it" school of thought when it comes to attacks?

Being raped isn't cool.

If everyone would avoid violence, that would be cool. However, given that there are - and for the forseeable future - will be, people who use violence against the innocent to further their own power, luxury, and lust . . . it would seem prudent, to me, to be able to defend oneself (and perhaps others around you) from unjustified attack. I, for one, am NOT willing to be raped because "violence isn't cool". I will use "violence" - justified, necessary, and (I hope) non-excessive - force, if necessary, to protect myself.
»

Well said

I would pose to you the idea of excessive force only has limited realities.  Review applicapble defense laws to determine the maxiumum force you can use in a given situation.  As a general rule, if a person is threatening you with a weapon or vastly superior force and you are in fear of your life or grave personal harm you are justified in using lethal force if needed.

I have an excellent book, "In the Gravest Extreme" by Massad Ayoob which is considered one of the important works on the topic of self defense.  You are welcome to borrow it if you like.

I agree with S6 on

"In the Gravest Extreme", almost a classic on the topic of self defense. It was available at the library.

Thanks. I've never been in

Thanks. I've never been in such a desperate situation. It's hard for me to know how I'd respond. I think I had an ethical framework in mind - more than a legal one - when I talked about "non-excessive". Another word I toyed with was self-controlled. Restraint might be a better term. In a conflict situation, this would mean using the minimum violence (harm) necessary to achieve protection.

»

Ugh

My touchpad is giving my fits today, and I keep losing the message I typed.  Let me boil it down.

The minimal force needed to end a situation is just that.  What is needed to end it.  Be it a blast of pepper spray or a blast from a gun.  You must view a lot of external circumstances, behavior, inherent threat, presence of a weapon, multiple attackers, etc...

My copy of Ayoob's book is gathering dust.  I am more than happy to let you use it for as long as you want.  This will give you a strong foundation in understanding minimal force.

As a general rule (although like every rule there are exceptions) meet unarmed force with non lethal or less lethal force (pepper spray or stun devices) and if the bad guy has ANYTHING that can be used as a weapon against you, even pepper spray, meet them with a lethal weapon.  If they can incapacitate you, they can kill you.  I AM NOT A LAWYER.  Consult with a civil rights attorney for a better understanding of Washington State defense laws.  This is a stand your ground state.  You are not obligated to retreat if you feel threatened.  Remember the "reasonable person" test.  Would a "reasonable person" agree you were at risk of being killed or severely harmed?   I could go on and on, but IANAL.  I am happy to discuss this publicly, through PM's or even face to face with any interested parties.

I am shocked by the Olympian's silence on this issue

I just can't believe the Olympian hasn't published the sketch, or reported that the perpetrator used a Taser. It seems like a pretty important public safety story to me.

What do you care?  You bash

What do you care?  You bash The Olympian every chance you get.  The Olympian is not the only source for news in the South Sounds, is it?  The story below was published yesterday.

Odd fight to pick

I thought the Olympian was a bit quiet and slowly forthcoming about the whole thing myself. Perhaps you don't agree, but is it really all that important when someone is worried about a rapist running around town? We all agree that is a problem, right?
»

Fight?

jlw's last comment was from 10:36a this morning (Sunday).  The article had been published for more than 24 hours at that point (Saturday morning - first and only comment was @ 10:14am).

Yes, I agree there's a problem but that doesn't seem to be the focus now does it?  6 and JT are contributing with proactive solutions and we're talking about reactive news coverage?  Hmmm...

Instead of telling us all how bad The Olympian is, just make Olyblog better.

»

May I refer you back to your own comments policy?

I overlooked the Olympian's publication of the sketch; I was looking for it, but missed it. My bad -- sorry, everybody.

But I have to say, I have a problem with the way my error was pointed out to me.

»

I agree

Posting the hyperlink to the Olympian's story would've been more than sufficient.

Alright, alright

JLW, I openly apologize for being a jerk.  The link alone would have been enough.  You are correct in pointing out my lapse in comment policy.

JD's mom now has a guardian angel..

for those times when I can't be around. Thanks for the reminder S6.

They are awesome devices

I'm glad to have given the nudge.  I need to get another one.  I have a friend who is a in Lacey and she called me wanting a gun, pepper spray, light artillery, air support, whatever I had laying around.  We're working on the gun bit, but she bought my Angel from me.  Easy enough to replace.

Thoughts on recent violent assaults

I hope the man is caught soon. Crime Stoppers has a reward out.

That guardian angel spray looks perfect, good tip. Looks much easier to use and more efficient than the canister spray I have now.

Another good book on self defense is by a local, Debbie Leung - Self defense, the womanly art of self care, intuition, and choice - Timberland library has a copy, Powell's Books does also. I also really like the book The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals that Protect us from Violence.

I hope the survivors heal well and completely. I thank everyone working on these cases, may they catch the guy soon. Perhaps with the reward now out, someone will turn him in.

I'm using all this as a reminder to think over my own safety.
