Phil Owen brought up an interesting point elsewhere.  All the talk of reforming police in this town, but given some of the problems fringe activists have caused, what about reforming activism?

My particular breed of activism is a bit different than that practiced by others, and I am still forming opions of the local activist community so I mainly want to sit back and listening.  Just thought this deserved it's own conversation.

This is an excellent topic Six!

I believe that one of the first steps for activists of all political persuasions is to respect the rights of their fellow citizens.   Our political beliefs do not entitle any of us from violating the rights of our fellow citizens.   As the old saying goes, “My right to swing my arm ends at your nose”!

A good example is Friday evenings on Fourth Avenue in the vicinity of Percival Landing.   Groups of citizens are on both sides of the street with signs showing their political beliefs.   Down near the Fountains we have the Women in Black expressing their political beliefs.   This is the way it was just last night and this has been occurring for quite some time now.   Occasionally some jerk (from either/all side(s) of the issues) will show up and try to cause trouble but for the most part it has been peaceful and all people are able to express their views without violating the rights of others.

There has been a consistent...

...and longstanding critique on OlyBlog of the "Tear it Down" and "Hate the Cops" mentality among the port protesters. That strategy alienates the middle, emphasizes conflict, and does little in the way of education or shifting perspective. You may not have been reading OlyBlog long enough to to have seen it (S6), but it's been present from the beginning.

My goodness

Why didn't you say this from the begining instead of trying to marginalize my other post about cop hating???

 EDIT: Finished thought....

The blog has a search function.

You should do some research before making assumptions about what goes on here.

I got confused for just a moment

About which things I had posted you were jumping on.  Guess you are in a bad mood lately?

This blog has a lot of things and content.  I'm not going to always wade through 2+ years of it.

Something bugging you of late?

Part of the problem is that

Part of the problem is that "Activist" is a broad word encompassing people who don't see eye to eye on everything, sometimes violently so.

Some activists who would boycott Stormans wouldn't be seen at the Port. Some who were externally dispersed at the Port would never think to gather at Planned Parenthood. Speaking of which, both sides of that issue could be considered Activists.

With that in mind a simple answer such as "form a union" wouldn't quite fly. It might work piece-by-piece for single-issue activists. But going against that idea is the PMR which maintains that troublemakers at the port weren't from their organization. Yet there's the PPU which hasn't had any trouble of note.

A Transparent organization easily audited or accountable to the public might be a start.

Don't argue with idiots.
