Romeo (Kolby King) and Juliet (Johanna Chhay) is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare which follows the star-crossed young lovers. They are drawn to each other from the first time they meet, despite that their families being sworn enemies. The play is set in Verona, Italy, and the director (Kristina Cummins) is placing it in a dystopian futuristic world. It starts out with a ball hosted by the Capulets. Romeo is pushed to attend by his infatuation for Rosaline (Kalea Sciaccotta), one of the Capulets’ nieces; although he knows that as a Montague, he should not be seen there. He meets Juliet and falls in love with her instead, but his identity is revealed. Tybalt (Nick Riley), Juliet’s cousin, wants to kill him as soon as he finds out but he is stopped by Juliet’s father (Samuel Derrick). He does not want blood shed at his ball, so he lets Romeo go. The story proceeds to show us the vicissitudes that the two lovers go through, finding hope in each other while there doesn’t seem to be any. Fate, though, has different plans for them.
