Fag Power? Bad Ass Bitches For Peace?

I keep seeing ones that say Fight The Rich, Not Their Wars. How are the "rich" behind the war?

Nice pic of a guy in a gas mask.  Thought this was just a march/rally.  Was he planning ahead?

Fight The Rich, Not Their Wars.

That one always makes me laugh.

So are they for peace or do they want a French Revolution-type deal? I get confused.

fighting wars for the benefit of the rich

I'm not sure if you guys are trolls or if you really haven't noticed how poor folks do all the fighting while the rich get richer and the politicians use the war as an excuse to dole out big contracts to their buddies. Here's a decent article on war profiteering if you are wondering how the rich are behind the war. http://www.thenation.com/doc/20030512/editors

I Am Not A Troll

and take offense to being called one just because I asked a question. That seems to be the tactic around here. Call somebody a name, question their way of thinking or attack a valid question if those people don't hold your belief or think the way you do. I'd like to know where you get your fact that all the poor folks do all the fighting and the rich get richer. That sounds more like a personal opinion and speculation on your part than an actual substantiated fact.

Is making a profit the cause (e.g. everyone is sitting in a dark room plotting the next conflict) or effect?

I don't think there's any doubt money can be made off of conflict and I would imagine it's natural for those with the most invested to gain the largest amount.

And are these conflicts necessarily bad for furthering U.S. influence?

To onry

I am sorry to offend. It just seems so obvious to me that war profiteering is well established fact that I wasn't sure if your question was sincere. Looking into the article I linked, I see that it assumes the same knowledge, which means it wouldn't help this situation. Probably a good war history book would be better, but I am sure there are many that focus on the exciting killing and strategy parts and don't deal with the economic aspects at all. I'll see if I can find one that I think does a better job of describing the issue. The one's I can think of off the top of my head are too far left politically to be useful here. It might take a while. I have two young boys who take most of my time, but I'll put it on the list. Perhaps other olybloggers can make suggestions meanwhile.

to TFI

Q1. I have no idea. Perhaps both. I imagine there are political and economic reasons for the war. Q2. I think they are reducing U.S.'s positive influence. By making us hated more throughout the world, we increase the likelihood of terrorist activity against us, increase the danger to our troops abroad, and reduce the effectiveness of peaceful and humanitarian diplomatic efforts abroad. This answer, contrary to my answer on war profiteering, is just personal speculation, although I have read others make this same observation (like the U.S. women's bridge team that just won the Venice Cup, for example).

Welcome IFerguson...

...You'll have to excuse the local natives -- sometimes they forget their manners.

Thanks for bringing up the issue of war profiteering. It seems that is hasn't occurred to some folks that the hundreds of billions of dollars we've been spending on this fiasco have been going into someone's pocket. What do the detectives say? Follow the money?

Yeah, I'm Sorry

I forgot how rude it was to say I don't like being called a TROLL over my opinion.  It certainly wasn't rude to be called one though.  Nice.  Notice how Rick only has nice things to say to those who support this protest?  Those of us who don't get ripped a new one.  Sad really.

We're also privileged

We're also privileged asshats. Of course, those of us who were born inherently filthy already knew that.

There's a place for people like us.

Please give me a second grace. Please give me a second face. I've fallen far down, the first time around, now I just sit on the ground in your way.

Would it be too hard to say "Thanks for posting photos of a local event?"

There've been lots of

There've been lots of interesting pictures, from many people, from many sides. Some pretty compelling stories of photographer's adventures too. Someone should get a collection and put something like the old Life magazines together.

Answering questions

My first thought is that the photographer doesn't have the answers as to why certain people have certain messages at a rally.  The photographer is documenting what happened, end of subject.

"How are the rich behind the war?"  I think Ike said it best - MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX.  Country Joe McDonald also said "there's plenty good money to be make by supplyin' the army with the tools of the trade".  I believe one of Michael Moore's documentaries showed a convention where people were talking about how much money is available to be made in Iraq.

Guy in a gas mask, planning ahead?  Quite possibly.  It seems that the answer to protest is chemical response.
