This from an editorial in The Olympian regarding TESC's payment for damaged or destroyed patrol vehicles.

In this case, Kimball said, the riot defendants who have no prior criminal history should face hefty restitution payments. Those with a prior criminal record probably should be treated differently, with more severe charges and jail time. Restitution is essential, Kimball said.

“I always ask myself, ‘How is justice best served?’,” Kimball said. In this case, he believes justice is best served by making those who did the damage pay the bill.

It’s a sound approach that prosecutors should embrace.

Looks like Sheriff Kimball is willing to cut some some slack to the rioters.  They screwed up, but for those with no criminal history, they may get off the hook with restitution, not felonies.

As far as those with criminal pasts (including one black defendant) it seems they will face stiffer charges.  Racism?  No.  Common sense.  Often first offenders, especially in a case where they may have been caught up in the moment are given slack. People with criminal pasts are not treated the same as people who have no criminal past.  I expect some cry of "racism" over this, which is why I am trying to head it off at the pass so to speak.

I kept waiting for someone to pick this up, to say "Wow, maybe these kids aren't going to have stiff felony charges around their necks the rest of their lives"  But nobody did, although I noticed there was a lot of outcry about just that possibility and a call for leniency.  Now that Sheriff Kimball is showing leniency to some, there is silence.

Kimball's approach is encouraging and makes sense

I don't generally read the O, so hadn't heard about this before seeing it here

I don't get it.

Who are you talking to?

What is news worthy or even accurate about

his concluding comments? Spirits were pretty high in the days following the riot. Everyone was loud. Some of the loudest voices in the community were those asking for books to be thrown at people. S6's personal disapointment that people aren't heralding the kid-gloves of our sherrif seems like just another attempt to play a very worn out hypocrite card. Does anyone really expect a lot of noise about this news?

Yeah I was a bit harsh

And pissed, and yes I played the hypocrite card.  Why not?  When he was the big bad evil sheriff threatening felony charges on a bunch of misguided kids then he was an a-hole.  When things settle down and he shows a reasonable human side, nobody pays attention?  Either nobody cares, or it doesn't serve an agenda like some of the earlier stuff I saw.  Can't play the "I hate pigs" card when they pigs treat people better than they deserve.

Just my two cents.  Or would you say this was just not newsworthy enough to discuss in between the park pictures and recipes?

Oh, it was plenty newsworthy boyo

...but why do you hate recipes?? ;-)

They are EVIL!

Recipes are tools of SATAN as interpreted by GEORGE BUSH.

Dang, I need to lay off the sugar :-)

But I want more of those ballistic chocolates.

I'm never going to live that down am I?

:-)  Next time I'll throw a pizza instead..

I was cleaning the boat, and found the bag of those ballastic chocolates too.  I ate like three of them.  I'm saving the leftovers as a backup weapon.  :-)

What's the problem?

?

Knowing Sheriff Kimball personally....

This is Dan's technique in all he does.  He tries to find a win-win.

I loved Dan's stand on prevention - "a great prevention program could put me out of business, I could retire early"
