Here is why I voted Nah.

Here is why I voted Nah. Back about 1969 Olympia had this Mayor named Tom Allen. His dream was to turn Sylvester Park into a parking garage. Allen, who ran an oil heating business, later got in trouble for somehow mandating that the current Olympia Library, which was constructed during his regime, had, you guessed it, oil heat. It was quite a local scandal at the time (mid-1970s).

Anyway, sometimes smaller is better. Sometimes local control is better. But, in my dealings with City and County public officials as opposed to State and Federal ones, I have learned that the smaller the jurisdiction, the greater the opportunity for, shall we say, ethical lapses. Out here in Grays Harbor County, there are many ethical lapses that would never be tolerated in Thurston County. They are not under the same level of scrutiny.

Sylvester Park is best left under the control of the State. Historically it was the Capital Campus. And if another guy like Tom Allen ever becomes Mayor, and it will happen, then Sylvester Park will remain safe.
