Did you know that over 80,000 people demonstrated at the recent G8 summit held in Germany on June 6-8? Did you know that demonstrators engaged in peaceful civil disobedience and effectively blockaded the entrances to the conference area, delaying the beginning of the summit? Did you read about this in your local paper? No! Because this article is the only thing the local fishwrapper has seen fit to publish regarding G8 lately. Don't despair, however; Olympia's own Rochelle Gause was present at the G8 summit protests in Heiligendamm, Germany earlier this month. Her article on the summit and the protests will appear in the July issue of Works In Progress.

The mainstream media is doing a great job of presenting a corporate-friendly view of the world. How fortunate we are that alternative new sources, struggling as they may be, still exist to present a fuller picture.

Update: There are more photos of the protests available here and here and here .

Yeah, do this and see what

Yeah, do this and see what kind of silo we end up living in.

OK, so maybe "tear down the wall"

was just a Floydian slip..

im down with turning silos and old factories into low income housing..

jesus. what I wouldn't give to have all those fools at the Olympian hung out to dry. can't we have a real paper? please? that's all I want for Christmas.

a local paper

Works In Progress consistently has well written articles from some pretty kick-ass perspectives. As far as a daily is concerned, the more we all add our 3 pennies to OlyBlog, the the greater its citizen based alternative. Creating printing points where anyone without online access can go to pick up an up-to-the-minute print seems pretty feasible. The physical distribution like the O has is a little difficult to match...

This is where cyberpunk style always-on-implants would be nice. That's a real hidden beauty of technological innovation...the expansion of communication is a catalyst for ideas, and the faster ideas develop the more difficult they are to dominate.

1000 words

On that note, Chaney found some nice art:

But really, to be fair: obviously the ideology is so important that it attracts literally hundreds of participants who uproot their lives to show up for a couple of days, as opposed to that easily dismissed ideology of equity and equality that attracts a mere 80,000.

Media Man to the rescue!

As most of you know, The Olympian webmaster "banned" me for being "abusive to other readers".  The beauty of it all is that truth will always prevail.

As those who have witnessed my true nature, I'm not abusive, but will defend my principles and view, sometimes with sarcastic wit, not necessarily appreciated by all.

There is more to the story than just Larry being "banned" and I'm now comfortable enough to share it.  After the "banning", Larry was told to use the "report" feature when he found something that offended him in The Olympia comments.  I did so, to the tune of 20 times (I've been told, I really didn't keep track) in the following week.  This resulted in a scathing email from the Publisher, accusing me of all sorts of mean, nasty, ugly thingies (I hope others recall Alice's Restaurant, otherwise that last line won't be understood).  I will say, although I disagreed with the "banning" (I felt I did nothing worse than many that post daily) and that I HAD a respect for the Publisher, I took the time to email him (and the webmaster) to apologize for my part of our disagreement (I'm 50% of all my problems) and yet, maintained that we needed to "agree to disagree".  I did not ask for special consideration nor to have my commenting service restored.  I respect their right to do business with whom they choose.

It gets interesting.

Subsequently, The Olympian withdrew support for a children's community service non-profit, because of their anger with me (where I work).  Now, it wasn't a huge chunk of money, and frankly this service can easily survive without the newspaper's support, but it told me a mountain of truth about their real motives in the marketplace.

The final chapter in this comedy, was finding the Publisher's support for a satirist in Tallahassee's paper (he was formerly the editor) where 1,000s of Muslim readers were offended by the cartoon, yet, he editorialized against Cal Thomas in The Olympian for accusing journalists of a "left bias".  It seems that the only one that can offend or be offended is the Newspaper of Record.

Both sides of the mouth?  You betcha, Sven!

Let's keep doing what we do, here in blogland and don't let the secret restrict our ability to get the message to the people.  I know that some of the populace will be less than tasteful in their blogs, but allow the truth to present itself.
