Olympia's Constitution in Crisis: The Case for Impeachment drew over 800 people, almost filling the Washington Center on Tuesday, February 20, 2007.

Elizabeth de la Vega, David Lindorff and Ray McGovern made compelling arguments about the need to impeach Bush/Cheney.

Each stressed that impeachment is necessary to restore the Constitution. While the list of impeachable offenses is long, de la Vega pointed out that incompetence was not what the framers of the Constitution had in mind. They also poked holes in the various "arguments" given by Democrats. Unlike the Clinton impeachment, de la Vega stated, the violations of law by Bush/Cheney are serious abuses of power and impeachment was intended to remedy those abuses.

All agreed that the evidence was overwhelming and that the impeachment process would be swift. They rejected the belief that impeachment would harm the Democrats. Lindorff noted that the Democrats would be harmed by not taking action, especially if the Republicans decide to take the lead on impeaching Bush/Cheney.

McGovern asked that if lying to get us into war, illegal wiretaps, dismissing the basic protections granted in the Bill of Rights and creating a unitary executive through signing statements are not impeachable, than what is?

I am posting these 35 Articles of Impeachment of President George W. Bush to give some idea of the depth and background behind the movement behind opposition to President Bush. I also post these with a specific respect for the rule of law as it is established in the Constitution of the USA. If the Constitution is not to be respected, then of what is America made? Are we a nation of laws, or a nation of men and women? These Kucinich Articles are illuminating and comprehensive, and I think worthy of posting here in their entirety. You can also sign the Kucinich Petition for the Impeachment of President George W. Bush

Ron Suskind, The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of ExtremismWow, this is damning. Is it true? Did members of the Bush Administration order intelligence agencies to create false reports in order to justify invading Iraq? A lot of people have been saying that's the case (for a long time). Maybe we can get closer to the truth as a result of this Congressional Probe. If it's true, that allegations that Bush Administration officials manipulated intelligence in order to suit their private interests in a war of choice, then it certainly gives support to the local anti-war advocates who have been working so hard, and who have invested so much in protecting our troops from reckless foreign policy and the abuses of the Bush Administration. Hopefully Congress will do what is right based on the finding of this probe, and if justified, take appropriate action to protect American Soldiers from the alleged abuses of members of the Bush Administration. Here's the text of a letter I delivered to my Congressman Brian Baird's office in Olympia, Washington this morning.

I also want to add that I requested that the Congressman's office staffer fax a copy of my cover letter along with the entire 65 pages of Impeachment Articles text to Congressman Baird (who is in D.C.). I suggest that you do the same (deliver the articles and ask that they be faxed) when you deliver your message of support for impeachment, governmental accountability and the rule of law:

Dear Congressman BairdTuesday, June 10, 2008
To: Congressman Brian Baird

Cindy SheehanCindy Sheehan [link to campaign website] took the stage this past weekend at SPSCC's Minneart Center for the Arts. Those in the audience were treated to a speech about Sheehan's campaign. Some of the topics were war, foreign policy, economics, history, health-care, class division, labor, political activism, issues specific to her district, and military.

Cindy was joined on-stage by Gary Murrell [link to campaign website], who is a Green Party candidate for Washington State's 6th Congressional District. He is challenging the re-election of Congressman Norm Dicks, a 30 year veteran of the Congress. The audience was also treated to a presentation by Linda Boyd, director of Washington for Impeachment [.org]. Linda Boyd has been instrumental in lobbying for the passage of impeachment memorials in the Washington State legislature that would call on national representatives to begin investigations into impeachable offenses as they have (allegedly) been committed by members of the Bush Administration. She continues a very active promotion of impeachment, based on apparent high crimes and/or misdemeanors having been committed by members of the Bush Administration.

I thought this was interesting as it compares to what is happening in Washington State:
87 yr-old NH state rep announces fast for impeachment

By Susan Serpa

I just got off the phone with Betty Hall. She is the 14-term State of N.H. representative who has introduced to the state house HR 24 to impeach Bush and Cheney. The public Hearing for the resolution is next Tuesday Feb. 19th (the day after President's day).

She is joining the Code Pink fast.

She is 87 years old and refuses to eat again until Conyers begins impeachment proceedings. She told me "I've had a good life. I can't think of any better way to end it."

Now, before you think I am heartless by "encouraging" this act by announcing it, I know Betty. When she decides to do something, there is no changing her mind - she's going to do it. She will not eat until impeachment proceedings begin in earnest. We owe it to her to make this worth her while. It's time to pull out ALL the stops and get Conyer's ass into gear! We cannot let this clear-headed, heroic woman sacrafice herself.

Temple of JusticeYesterday, Tuesday the fifth of February, was the Washington for Impeachment Lobby Day. Fifteen or twenty citizens gathered at the Capitol Campus and spent a good portion of the day lobbying and talking to legislators and legislative aids about the importance of impeachment.

It started raining as soon as I left my house. It was windy. It was cold. I almost turned around and returned home. By the time I got to the Capitol Campus, I was considerably wet (though definitely not soaking, which was good.) I went into the cafeteria where I found my fellow impeachment advocates.

The Olympia-based Citizens Movement to Impeach Bush/Cheney will meet again THIS COMING MONDAY FEBRUARY 4 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Olympia Center, 222 Columbia NW in downtown Olympia. Instead of our usual meeting room, we’ve been scheduled for Room 103.

We’re developing the evening’s agenda to help make more progress on all four of our major strategies:

~ Reaching out to the public in many ways to inform them and build the impeachment movement
~ Focusing public pressure on our local Congressmen, Brian Baird and Adam Smith to persuade them to support impeachment
~ Urging the U.S. House Judiciary Committee and other Congressional leaders to support impeachment
~ Supporting SJM 8016 and HJM 4027 in our Washington State Legislature, which would have our Legislature urge Congress to support impeachment
