Art in The Park! The Monarch Sculpture Park

Ladies and gents, this is a blog entry to bring your attention to Art in the Park, at the Monarch Sculpture Park.
It' Sunday, August 15th from 10:30 to 6pm. This is a family friendly biannual event with artists booths where you can view and buy all types of local artwork, from sculpture to painting to book and paper arts. There will be entertainment, hands-on activities, folk art demonstrations and food. The Artesian Rumble Arkestra (street band) is starting things off at 11:00 with our eclectic mix of Jazz, Rock, Bollywood, Balkan, (rhythm) and blues arrangements, followed by the Mas Uda Belly Dancers and a percussion workshop which is free and open to everybody starts at 3pm. Entrance fee donation of $5 for 12 and older. Location: Monarch Sculpture Park, 8431 Waldrick Road SE Olympia (btwn Old Hwy 99 and Military Road.) Info: 360 264 2408. Thanks, Devon Reid

Lauded The New Up Announces Olympia, WA Concert, July 23.

The New Up, voted a Best Bay Area Breakout Band of 2009 on MTV2/Ourstage, proudly announces five performances in Washington, Oregon and Southern California, beginning July 23.  The New Up recently released their new multiple award-winning video single, Bitch, from their CD Better Off, to all video music media outlets nationwide, as they put the finishing touches on their fourth studio effort, Gold, which is scheduled for an August 2010 release.  The New Up, who according to Jennifer Gibson of Flagpole Magazine, “shatters your placid veneer with some of the most striking, exotic and brashly coherent indie-ish pop that’s ever graced your ears,” will embark on their fourth national tour in October 2010.  These regional shows will provide rare opportunities to get up-close-and-personal with The New Up in very special, intimate venues as the band introduces new songs in many ‘fan stronghold’ cities.

'Waterways to Broadway' Choir Concert Begins June 9

The South Puget Sound Community College Concert Choir is back in action this spring with From Waterways to Broadway, taking place on Wednesday, June 9 at the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts. As the show’s name implies, the first half will hold an aquatic theme, focusing on the world of water in song, including “Loch Lomond,” “The Seal Lullaby,” “Away from the Roll of the Sea,” “Wood River” and “Song for the Mira (River).” The show then transitions into a number of Broadway classics, including medleys from The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, as well as a variety of solos, duets and small ensembles. The South Puget Sound concert choir, performing alongside the Puget Sound Community Choir, is directed by Molly McNamara with piano accompanist Jennifer Hermann. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $7.50 for seniors or students with valid IDs and $5 for children 12 and under. Capital Youth Symphony Placement Auditions and Annual Fundraising Garage Sale on May 15!

OLYMPIA – May 7, 2010 – The Capital Youth Symphony is looking for talented, enthusiastic orchestra and band students who want to make new friends, play together as a team, have fun and put on outstanding symphony concerts for the community.

Placement auditions for the 2010-11 season begin Saturday, May 15, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1515 Harrison Ave. NW, Olympia. Students, or parents, should call (360) 956-1892 for an appointment. Additional dates for auditions will be added as needed.

The symphony's first annual fundraising garage sale is also scheduled for Saturday, May 15 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, also at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Discover hidden treasures while supporting an essential youth musical arts program. Donations of household goods to the garage sale can be made by calling (360) 956-1892.The Capital Youth Symphony is gearing up for its 28th season of bringing the musical arts and the highest-quality symphony concerts to area students and the community.

Concert dates for the 2010-11 season are: Nov. 20, 2010; Mar. 12, 2011; and May 14, 2011. All performances are held at the Minnaert Performing Arts Center at South Puget Sound Community College.To audition for the youth symphony, students should be prepared to play a two-minute solo of their choice and a scale. Each student will also be provided a short piece of music to play in order to get a sense of their ability to read music by sight.
