This is just a note in case anybody has questions about the recent change of focus to a more hyperlocal model than OlyBlog has been: we are not encouraging a vacuum of national and international content on OlyBlog, rather, we would like people to do a little legwork on the matter and tie such content into hyperlocal matters.

Did you recently watch a movie you want to share with everybody? Excellent. Please tell us if we can get it at the Library, or Rainy Day, etc. A recipe? Where can we find the ingredients? We want to encourage the development of OlyBlog as a place to tie our community together.

I found this article in the Olympian today about a cyclist who was hit and the driver fled the accident.

Hit-and-run leaves cyclist injured, man arrested

An Olympia man was arrested early this morning in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left a Rochester man seriously injured.

Jason R. Bailey, 36, of Rochester, was riding northbound about 9:30 Wednesday night on Old Highway 99 in Rochester, approaching 201st Avenue, when a car struck him from behind, said Trooper Christian Wilson of Washington State Patrol.

The driver fled. Bailey, who was wearing a helmet, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He is in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

After receiving an anonymous tip, police arrested Andrew E. Scott, 29, of Olympia at 4:20 this morning. He is now in the Thurston County Jail. Wilson said Scott, who was driving on a suspended license, would be charged with felony hit-and-run.

I am sad for Jason Bailey and his family and friends. I hope he gets well soon, and is able to fully recover from his injuries.

I am glad that someone was able to make an anonymous tip and perhaps have saved Jason's life. It made a difference for sure. I am glad that someone was there to watch out and do the right thing. I would very much like to follow this story as it goes along, and hopefully Mr. Scott will spend a long time in jail for doing this.

CNN to Launch Completely User Generated News Site
Written by Josh Catone / February 11, 2008 11:43 AM

We've been writing a lot about the trend of media companies paying more attention to citizen journalism and amateur reporting tools. Perhaps no mainstream media outlet has done more to push citizen journalism into the spotlight over the past year than CNN. In August 2006, they launched the user generated content-focused i-Report feature on their web site, which has since attracted over 100,000 submissions from users, and last summer they held the first of two CNN-YouTube presidential debates, in which questions were submitted via YouTube. CNN is about to take their participation in amateur news reporting a big step forward with the planned launch of iReport.com, an entire portal dedicated to completely user generated news content.
