Cooling a fevered planet: the politics & economics of solving the climate crisis.

When big corporations thwart democracy they also thwart sustainability.
When resources are poured into unnecessary wars rather than peaceful solutions, this also drains investment from needed green infrastructure.
How corporate power, militarization are linked to the climate crisis, and how we can fight back.

Anarchists Against The Wall - Shachaf Polakow Speaks

"Israeli apartheid and occupation isn't going to end by itself - it will end when it becomes ungovernable and unmanageable." Anarchists Against the Wall was established in 2003 in response to Israel’s construction of the Separation Wall on Palestinian land in the Occupied West Bank. Activity began with a four-month protest tent in Mas’ha, where the wall was to leave 96% of the Palestinian village's land on the Israeli side. AATW continues to work with Palestinians in joint popular struggle and, throughout the West Bank. Efforts are coordinated through local Palestinian villages’ popular committees and are essentially Palestinian led. Anarchists Against the Wall believe it their duty as Israeli citizens to resist immoral policies and actions carried out in their name. “We believe that it is possible to do more than demonstrate inside Israel or participate in humanitarian relief actions. It is time to physically oppose the bulldozers, the army and the occupation.” Polokow will discuss the work of AATW and his own experiences in solidarity with Palestinians in villages in the West Bank. Under occupation law, people are indicted for simply participating in demonstrations and AATW activists are faced with mounting legal expenses to cover defense in Israeli courts. Donations in the evening are suggested to help meet legal costs for Palestinians and Israelis arrested in the course of non-violent protests against the Separation Wall being built on Palestinian land. Events will be held at Evergreen from 12pm to 1:30pm in Sem II room D1105 and at Traditions Cafe from 7pm to 8:30pm Sponsored at Evergreen by Students Educating Students About the Middle East, OMJP and Political Economy of the Media. Sponsored at Traditions Cafe by OMJP and the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice.

Vigil to Mark the 4,000th US Military Personnel Death in Iraq

4,000 Too Many! Come out to stand witness and mark the terrible human costs of an unnecessary war of aggression. The following is courtesy of Glen Anderson, a long time FOR organizer:
The Olympia Movement for Justice and Peace has wanted to mark the 4,000th U.S. military death in Iraq. During its meeting on Wednesday evening March 26, OMJP decided to mark this milestone by participating in the Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s regularly scheduled peace vigil this coming Friday the 28th from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the south end of Percival Landing (4th & Water), in downtown Olympia.

The Olympia FOR is happy to welcome OMJP’s participation. We’re also welcoming some local supporters of the Tibetan people’s longing for cultural autonomy and respect. From time to time other groups participate in the Olympia FOR’s vigil, and we like to let new folks know about this Olympia tradition. We have been vigiling there since November 1998 – initially seeking to raise public awareness of the economic sanctions the previous Bush and Clinton imposed against Iraq.

The Olympia FOR has worked in our local community since 1976 (32 years) to promote peace and social justice. The FOR’s international level (www.ifor.org) and national level (www.forusa.org) have worked courageously and nonviolently since 1914-1915 (beginning of world War I). The FOR has nonviolently opposed all wars from World War I onward.

Impeachment meeting

[via omjp]

The Olympia-based Citizens Movement to Impeach Bush/Cheney will meet again THIS COMING MONDAY FEBRUARY 4 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Olympia Center, 222 Columbia NW in downtown Olympia. Instead of our usual meeting room, we’ve been scheduled for Room 103.

We’re developing the evening’s agenda to help make more progress on all four of our major strategies:

~ Reaching out to the public in many ways to inform them and build the impeachment movement
~ Focusing public pressure on our local Congressmen, Brian Baird and Adam Smith to persuade them to support impeachment
~ Urging the U.S. House Judiciary Committee and other Congressional leaders to support impeachment
~ Supporting SJM 8016 and HJM 4027 in our Washington State Legislature, which would have our Legislature urge Congress to support impeachment
