Poverty Parties

Between the Panic of 1893 and the Stock Market Crash of 1929, there was a nationwide form of entertainment called a "poverty party." Very little has been written about this fad where middle class people would dress in rags, eat food associated with lower classes, and advertise the event with phonetic spelling.

The Washington State Library blog, Between the Lines, has a brief description of one such party held in Ridgefield in 1910.
