Dr. Susan Wicklund will be at Orca Books tonight (Wednesday, February 13) at 7 p.m. reading and answering questions about her book, This Common Secret: My Journey as an Abortion Doctor. This emotionally resonant book tells the stories of Dr. Wicklund and the many women she helped during her 20 years as an abortion provider. Included are many hair-raising tales of harassment of the doctor, her coworkers, and her family by anti-choice activists, the extremity of which was shocking even for those of us who are familiar with the vehemence and venom of the “pro-lifers.” Eventually the harassment became so rabid that Dr. Wicklund had to sleep with a gun by her pillow, as well as carrying one as she went about her daily activities. According to Peter Matthiessen, this is “an inspiring book on a critical subject by a brave woman who must travel armed in the American West to do what she thinks is right." Orca Books is at 509 4th Avenue East in downtown Olympia.
