Too bad we have to wait for a crisis

but maybe now folks will start thinking seriously about repairing the things that contribute to this kind of flooding and the ongoing "slow oil spill" that is destroying the Sound. Unfortunately, we're developing things right now that will need to be fixed 25 years from now when we're "smarter." Our unwillingness to be proactive regarding the environmental impacts of development are tomorrow's crises. When Lacey and other surrounding areas are paved over, where will all that stormwater go?

One slightly bizarre thing is that

every year or two, some Master's student in the Environmental Studies department at Evergreen spends a year studying these problems and writes a masterpiece with some progressive and potentially doable ideas. I've even seen whole classes work with LOTT as a project and put together some marvelous reports. Of course, their suggestions may or may not work, but they certainly won't work if no one appoints a task force to investigate possible implementation. Government, a very human institution, moves toward the point of least resistance. Only when disasters happen and people increasingly cry for action, does action occur. Ironically, this trend has been documented in environmental studies of this sort.
