Oct 18 2007 - 10:00am Oct 18 2007 - 12:00pm TODAY! I will be offering a class called Talking with Toddlers at the Freeschool beginning next Thursday. From the Freeschool website: This class is designed to help families learn to communicate with children who are just beginning to develop expressive language. Language development is crucial for social, emotional, and cognitive growth. When children experience delay, they are more likely to have difficulty with other language-based activities such as reading and writing. This class will help children get on track, and shorten the amount of time that they spend with little or no way to express themselves. You can register online for the class here. |

I was recently reading an opinion in a zine called Rad Dad. It addressed positive reinforcement, mostly saying that it should be avoided as much as negative reinforcement. The idea, according to the author, is that saying "good job", or some equivalent, every time a child accomplishes something can lead to the child doing things for your approval, not self motivated, and not for the sake of discovery. I was wondering if you have an opinion on this. I understand the point the author makes, and to me it makes sense. I've been thinking perhaps directing the praise back at the child would be the best tack, such as saying "You did it!" in place of "Good Job".
Absolutely.

On the positive feedback issue: children are tuned differently at the factory. Some will do things for approval, some not so much. Some like to imitate, others not. It is my experience that adults tend to overestimate their influence on the behavior and personality of their kiddos. There is some new research which suggests that at the age of around 3, children are much more interested in other children than they are in their parents.
When you think of the long and gloomy history of man, you will find more hideous crimes have been committed in the name of obedience than have ever been committed in the name of rebellion. -C.P. Snow
